Eh? What was that?

Let's face it - we've always looked a bit slow & cumbersome in comparison with the best half-dozen sides in Europe.
The passing back to the keeper from the halfway line gets really annoying after a while. It's like our midfield are totally bereft of ideas.
Agreed. The difference with France is night and day. They move quickly, make runs, and make through balls. For whatever reason we just seem ste at it. We did a lot on set plays in 2018, but without that I'm not sure we're worth a QF place. The passing back to the keeper from the halfway line gets really annoying after a while. 2021 results as a guide to each sides form.
Germany --- P8 -- W4 -- D2 -- L2 -- GD10
England ---- P8 -- W7 --D1 -- L0 -- GD12
England haven't scored more than once in six games but have only conceded one goal in their last nine games.
I'm not sure form counts for much in a game like this. Plus Germany have a nasty habit of turning up when it matters.Germany --- P8 -- W4 -- D2 -- L2 -- GD10

Honestly, it could go either way. We've seen that both teams can be dangerous, and both teams can be timid and boring. It will depend on who is up for it on the day and which players take the initiative.
If we get beaten, we can have no complaints. Its not like getting FRA or POR would have been easier.

England being described as "dangerous" If we get beaten, we can have no complaints. Its not like getting FRA or POR would have been easier.
Maybe if England can dupe a penalty from the game. 2 goals from 3 games against some very average / below average teams and i've seen very little danger posed from England.

The reason is simple. France have better players than England do. g4ry13 said:

I'm going to be very surprised if Southgate sets us up anything other than defensively against the Germans.
I have a theory that Southgate has been playing a safety first team precisely because he knew we'd get a tough last 16 fixture.
"We will play during the group as if we were facing top quality opponents. Then, when we are facing such opponents, we'll know what to do" is what I think is in his mind.
I think it very unlikely that Safegate will suddenly decide to go all swashbuckling.
Expect two defensive midfielders again, slow and square passes to the full backs, Kane dropping deep, and Sterling to start.
And let's face it, if we get to the last 8 having beaten ze Germans, even with a boring 1-0, Gareth's job is safe.

He could win every game 1-0 and the whole thing and he'd be Sir Gareth in the next honours list."We will play during the group as if we were facing top quality opponents. Then, when we are facing such opponents, we'll know what to do" is what I think is in his mind.

Hopefully some great matches coming up, although it will be hard to better last night’s entertainment
Yes but IMO it's a shame we've ended-up with so many good teams in the same half of the draw in the knockout stage - obviously to some extent a consequence of how the results went in the group games but the way it's worked out it's like having Federer, Nadal and Djokovic all in the same half of the draw at Wimbledon when they were in their prime! Still, from England's point of view they're in the weaker half of the draw and will get few better chances of making it to the final of a major tournament...England’s strikers have been rubbish but then again have you seen much service for them? It’s a vicious circle. Poor service, the strikers come deeper and become totally ineffective.
For all the plaudits for Foden/ Greilish / Saka, the best we hope for from them is a little run before “winning” a free kick. Very few telling crosses for Kane to attack ( if he’s not retreated to the centre circle).
We desperately need a decent controlling midfielder like de Brunye or Pogba ( for France anyway), that actually has the vision to open defences. There is no one English who can do that.

Some of the passes during this tournament have been utterly delicious. Even Wales are doing it...
Has anyone up front been making the runs for Pogba-type passes? I cannot recall seeing any, but haven't looked for the runs either.
