England’s strikers have been rubbish but then again have you seen much service for them? It’s a vicious circle. Poor service, the strikers come deeper and become totally ineffective.
For all the plaudits for Foden/ Greilish / Saka, the best we hope for from them is a little run before “winning” a free kick. Very few telling crosses for Kane to attack ( if he’s not retreated to the centre circle).
We desperately need a decent controlling midfielder like de Brunye or Pogba ( for France anyway), that actually has the vision to open defences. There is no one English who can do that.
Grealish and Foden have been totally oversold so far IMO. Grealish is no Gascoigne, that's for sure. Saka looked good though. Young and fearless.

The kid is brain dead or brain washed. Either way, he can't kick a ball for toffee.

So you also felt England played a perfectly expressive performance?

It's hard for attackers like Grealish and Foden to look good with the way Southgate has the team playing, coupled with Sterling's refusal to pass the ball to his team mates which the pundits highlighted in the build up the Czech game.Saka looked good though. Young and fearless.

I have a theory that Southgate has been playing a safety first team precisely because he knew we'd get a tough last 16 fixture.
"We will play during the group as if we were facing top quality opponents. Then, when we are facing such opponents, we'll know what to do" is what I think is in his mind.
I think it very unlikely that Safegate will suddenly decide to go all swashbuckling.
Expect two defensive midfielders again, slow and square passes to the full backs, Kane dropping deep, and Sterling to start.
And let's face it, if we get to the last 8 having beaten ze Germans, even with a boring 1-0, Gareth's job is safe.
I'm going to get laughed at here but i trust GS knows a lot more about me than managing a football team and has a plan to get out of the group playing safe football whilst rotating players to keep them fresh. He's playing Kane continuously for him to break his duck and get his confidence back. When we get a hard opponent he knows how to change gear and 'shock' the side. Straight A student.
Once again you troll with another moronic post illustrating your total ignorance.
You have nothing to say and you're saying it far too loud. Why don't you bore off back to a Porsche production numbers thread?

The stat that Pickford received 30 passes is shocking. We passed back to the keeper , every 3 minutes! FFS!
No wonder we don’t score many and it’s like watching paint dry.

All I can assume by you defending him is that you agree with him that England played a perfect and expressive game.

It's good there's plenty of optimism in this thread (the same thread that moans almost continously for 90 minutes when England are actually playing a match, oddly enough). Germany would need to play the way they started against Hungary for 90 minutes for England to have any chance at all, in reality. And England would need to bring their A game - which I'm not sure happens too often. Can't see it, myself, not without a huge turnaround in match form.
It's like Jonathan Wilson is reading this thread:

I agree about the Kane point, but disagree that Southgate has a change of gear and shock tactics up his sleeve. England national team managers get very little time to develop tactics in their players, and my belief is that Southgate only knows one way. Keep possession, don't let full backs get caught upfield, and rely on set pieces, or a bit of individual magic for goals.Saying that, I'm hoping next Tuesday we turn up and Germany don't
I really hope we've been practising our penalty taking............

Lol Saka brain dead?
The same Saka that has 3 MOM performances for England in 5 appearances?
He's 19 and not a first choice player and has other players in front of him, yet was one of the best players on the pitch when given a chance.
What did you want him to say, We played crap and didn't create much and the manager has all his tactics wrong and ruin his chances of starting the next game and England career before it's even started.
Although what he said was far from what we actually saw on the pitch, it was a standard response with trying to put a positive spin on it for PR purposes.
On Kane, for the betterment of the team, If he isn't fit then he should just let GS know and either drop to the subs bench for DCL or ask to be subbed after say 60 mins if he is still struggling.
He's playing like a shadow of himself and looks like a statue at the moment, I'm guessing DCL is raring to go and we will see a lot more movement/runs once he gets a chance.

I'll ask again....by defending him are you agreeing with him that England played a perfect and expressive game?
You're accusing someone of being "brain dead" and then using crap logical arguments like that? He's 19 FFS. How many national TV interviews did you do when you were 19?
He was our best player in the last match. He was up and down the pitch and one of very, very few to look even remotely threatening. He's mistaken on the performance, BUT he has a totally different perspective on it to you and I. He was likely just pleased with his own performance and didn't want to downplay the team. "Glad I got MotM as the rest of the team were st" could prove problematic for a while in his career...
A lot of people are downplaying Germany. They are a good side. They have weaknesses, but unless Southgate livens our team up and gives them freedom to express themselves we are going to struggle to exploit them.
They're beatable. But so are we. I suspect we'll get the usual England v Germany game. It would not surprise me if it goes to penalties and the usual result ensues. But who knows, maybe the team will take us back to 2001
