I’m just back from Qatar and one of my foremost thoughts was that the World Cup has the potential to be an unmitigated disaster.

The country is simply not suited to football as it currently is.

I have visions of huge numbers of fans endeavouring to have what they consider a “Great time” which is the total opposite to the Qatari idea of a great time.

And that’s if many even bother to book. Travel to any current is a complete utter ballache at present and that doesn’t help.

What are other people’s thoughts?

Its been that way from the day of the announcement when it was obvious to the world and his dog, FIFA had taken a massive bung to award it to them......

I'm not sure I'll even bother to watch much of it tbh.....being an old fart too much of the gloss of what the WC was (to me) has now long gone.

Fifa were bribed - Qatar is wholly unsuitable from a political and general suitability point of view.

I have no issues with lesser footballing countries hosting the tournament - if they have the infrastructure and are politically suitable. Massive bribes were made, there was no reason to choose Qatar.

Will fans attend? I have no idea, but I won't be going (not that I've ever been to one before, but I would consider it now).

I'd imagine the Qatari's will be desperate to portray a tourist friendly atmosphere so I'd be surprised if they didn't let some things slide for the duration of the tournament.

It's a disgrace that they get to keep the WC, it just proves that crime does indeed pay.

Any major European nation could step up to hold a WC with a few months notice without too many issues.

Following closely on the heels of that other soccer utopia, Russia? FIFA hasn't a shred of credibility.

Russia actually put on a brilliant WC, regardless of whether or not they should have got it. But as for Qatar, given the thousands of migrant workers who have died constructing the facilities, we should not be going.

Has anyone watched the ''Men who sold the world cup'' on prime or discovery + i think it's on ?

It is about the Russia and Qatar WC bids and is very interesting about the whole culture within FIFA from top to bottom.

I'm not saying what Qatar/Russia did was right but I think it is the only way anybody wins a sporting occasion like this.. wether it is buying votes or people , they played FIFA's game, they didn't make their own game. I think if it was to be really investigated they would see the South Africa and Brazil WC's would be the same.

I agree. I suspect we bribed the IOC to get the 2012 Olympics. But that was ok because our bribes were successful. It's when we get outbribed that we start complaining.

I cannot stomach the idea of England going to Qatar. I'm not the campaigning type by any measure, but there's no way I will be watching or actively following any of it, and will boycot any sponsor companies. Clearly neither FIFA nor the companies in question will give any f**ks, but it's so utterly morally bankrupt on so many levels that i truly believe anyone with a conscience should simply ignore the whole tournament; it's hardly a great sacrifice. Put it another way; is this the WC any decent country wants to be known for winning?

My concern Is that Qatar likely see it as a big family event, everything there is sanitised and controlled.

English football fans dont take kindly to being controlled. It’s tribal. They are loud, boisterous, drinking, essentially taking over an area.

Do that in Qatar and it won’t end well.

I’m not feeling hopeful.

Hope it somehow disgraces the country and backfires.

Bunch of s

Disgusting that there aren't more decent people in football to stand up.

It's built on slavery.

So that's a no from me.

I'm interested to see how Nike, Coke, etc. all gloss that over...

It will be a rubbish WC to attend in person, on TV it will look spectacular. That's all FIFA and their sponsors care about.

As a Scot, I'd force down a world cup win there if I had to biggrin
