The 1940s apparently, presumably when we arrived for their oil.

How long should football have to have been in the country? Isn't something like this how you drive new investment in the sport to grow it?
Yes it's very important to drive new investment in the sport and to grow it in a country with a population of 2.88m...... that's going to have a huge impact on global football and will ensure an impressive return on investment....

I just can't understand how people can defend this joke of a world cup, the whole thing stinks.

is this the WC any decent country wants to be known for winning?
As a Scot, I'd force down a world cup win there if I had to biggrin
We're gonna be the most hated country in the world if we beat Ukraine. So maybe it's best to sit this one out (painful though it is after all these years of missing out), seeing as Qatar is a truly appalling country and nobody in their right mind will want to spend thousands upon thousands travelling and staying there to "enjoy" a World Cup under their conditions, and let Wales try to take that accolade...

Awarding the event to Qatar was done under the reign of Sepp Blatter at FIFA, and he now admits it was a mistake. I doubt they will make a similar mistake again. If it was to be awarded to the Gulf, it would have been more logical to go to UAE, with much larger population and 7 distinct Emirates. However, it can't be undone now, so would you prefer your nation - assuming they have qualified - withdraw now?

Nobody is going to withdraw now. It has never sounded as if any country was actually seriously considering it.

Just a few off the top of my head

Qatar - A one city country, every team in the same place and no travelling to other team bases
Qatar - No footballing history or passion
Qatar - Extremely expensive
Qatar - Few hotel options
Qatar - Human rights issues
Taking place in winter to avoid the heat, 2 years worth of domestic leagues messed around to accommodate

That's not even getting into the corruption side of this world cup.

One city county, I think that as positive, any one can watch all of 64 matches, 2 per day, traveling distance max 50 kilometres between afternoon match and evening match.
No footballing history, with this WC it may inspire them and have a footballing legacy, and who knows you may see them in premiership in few years time.
Expensive, depends on your salary, take London, Paris, new York they are all expensive but still people live their.
Accommodation, apartment is 85 us dollars, hotel 250 us dollars, cruise ships 350 us dollars and their depending on star rating and their is many more.
Human rights issue, you have a point, they may relax the law while the WC is on, but should not stop people going though.
The WC was switched from July/August to November/December lots of people complain of being too hot in July/August, next WC in 2026 is being staged in Canada/USA and Mexico temperature in those countries will be around 35c same as Qatar November/December..
You can complain about it now, but when the WC starts, no doubt you will be watching your chosen team and cheering them on.

So why do you think it doesn't stink and why do you support it so strongly?

For the latter point - I won't be watching for the first time ever ... it's the point at which Football jumped the shark for me and a very long step too far. I'm not telling anyone else what to do and really don't care but this is past where my line in the sand was drawn.

As far as I'm concerned no matter where it is staged, wether it be in Qatar, north pole, south pole, Ukraine, seria or even in Russia world cup is world cup.
I totally agree with sepp Blatter, it's a world cup and every country in the world should be entitled to hold a world cup at least once.

I'm against Sepp Blatter on that point so that confirms that my moral compass is still functioning.

A world cup is only once every 4 years so they are in short supply. Great footballing nations such as England, Spain, Argentina and Uruguay have only hosted once in history and now the mighty Qatar is joining them???

There will be no legacy, it is too small a nation to develop, how many football teams can one city support? The single and only reason it is being held there is money which somehow persuaded the footballing suits to think it is a good location for a world cup. There must have been a big order for brown envelopes a few years ago.

You agree with his crass, spurious and self-serving justification for accepting back handers?

Don't you think some countries might not be suitable? Tuvalu for example.

I don't know, what are the bribes financials like? Might be a great place for a World Cup.

Tuvalu, a tiny little island in the Pacific.

You are extracting a urine hear.

Posted above, all those points are little excuses.

For those who are against, what is the real reason,
Come on, be honest, what is the real reason that you are against Qatar of hosting the world cup.

The human rights abuses undertaken (and concommitent deaths of workers) to build the stadiums, which will serve no further purpose after World Cup. The corruption of FIFA in the awarding of the competiton. The unsuitability of the climate and the local lifestyle to hosting a World Cup.

What else were you thinking might be the problem?
