That certainly seems to be when it went sour for Isak. The story is that he was in contract talks and was promised more money, then Staveley gets the boot and Mitchell comes in and puts an end to any negotiations. He’s got the challenge of balancing the PSR books and Isak is on a long contract. I can recall many times last season when Isak's body language just didn’t look right, and it all makes sense now. He was doing the business on the pitch, but he’ll have felt cheated and undervalued by the people that employ him. That’s never going to work and it wouldn’t have happened with Staveley at the club. She was the person that could sell the vision, make players feel like they were part of something exciting. When you’re young and impressionable stuff like that matters, but who’s doing that job now? No one I suspect.

The biggest worry isn’t Isak leaving, it’s that other players end up feeling disillusioned. How could they not? They’ve bought into the project and now they’re seeing this whole debacle play out on the global stage, every last depressing detail of it. If you’re Bruno or Tonali, why stay at Newcastle?

Yes that was my understanding of the situation. On reflection I called isak a money grabbing mercenary, but in reality, he was obviously promised something he never ended up getting, and of course that's going to annoy them.

As for other players leaving, I think we're mostly ok on that for now, but I suspect this time next year will be a different story. If they don't sort this mess out and quick, the whole "project" will unravel and we'll be starting from scratch. Pretty concerning tbh.

I think a lot of fans are feeling salty right now because after the success of last season, this close season was vitally important for the club to really take things by the horns and move forward, and yet we've now a weaker squad than before the season ended, with the champions League ahead of us (and now extra matches), it's starting to look like this could be a disappointing season when it should have been great. This debacle will set us back years, I predict.

Twas ever thus with the toon, nearly always been a st show in my lifetime, and it doesn't look like changing any time soon.

We can relate. Liverpool didn't really strengthen after our first PL title. We were in a position of strength and didn't capitalise on it and it cost us dearly.

As things stand, if you get big bucks for Isak, do you have any confidence it will be spent wisely?

Liverpools fortunes only really changed when we installed a world class recruitment team. Only Karius, Keita and Nunez haven't lived up to expectations. That's an amazing hit rate.

Tell you what, Park Seung-soo is a player, going to be really interesting to see how he develops over the coming season.

Great seeing Miley back too, almost going to feel like a new signing.

Well supposedly the plan was to loan, but Howe has requested more time to assess him due to how much he’s impressed.

About time this happened to some player or other. At some stage someone needed to be told- sign a contract? Stick to it, no one forced you to sign it and trouser all the cash. Stick to your word.
