What a win. Darren Bent played excellent (we won so I can forgive the two penalty misses), Steed tore them apart with his footwork, Campbell with his pace and Gordon was again on fire.

Unlucky Ferdinand's goal didn't count, especially after such a wonderful celebration hehe

Jones though...what a miss, spectacularly bad attempt to kick the ball, thank god we managed to get the third through a wonder goal from Zenden. Cracking game which surely means we're safe for yet another season (especially with some promising games coming up)

I've been impressed with Meyler and Henderson in midfield again, we've got a young squad with plenty of promise IMO so things are looking up. It's rare to be a Sunderland fan and to be looking forward to the end of the season run-in. Should be an enjoyable finish, despite having to play Manchester UTD.

Chuffed to bits.

Agree with everything above.

hehe I know, and to look at a squad with the feeling that "Yes, these will improve and perform better next season"

Today, we lacked nothing in any department, even with Hutton and Mensah missing.

EDIT

Stolen from SMB

Gordon 27

Ferdinand 25
Turner 26
da Silva 30
Ricco 25

Hendersen 19
Meyler 21
Cattermole 22
Malbranque 29

Bent 26
Campbell 22

that's an average of 22.9 years old, very young indeed.

I think if we can keep that squad together for a year or two then we can look forward to some decent seasons ahead!

Great performance on Saturday! Could have (should have) been 6 or more..... clap

...And it went well today..took me 55 hours and 9 countries to get back to England this week, so a trip up to Dull was out of the question...

But we won, again, 3 points courtesy of Bent again.

Looking OK for next year?

I think 10th place is now possible and I am happy with that. I certainly thought we would be nowhere near during our mid season slump.

The sending off today was a bit of a joke.

Pleased to have another away win this season, it's about time! Didn't manage to catch the game at all this week unfortunately but from what I've read, we destroyed them in the first half. Watching MOTD however, it didn't really show much of Sunderland apart from the goal and the malicious ball bounce....

I see Steed is yet again man of the match for us despite only playing one half. His transformation since the bking prior to the Fulham game has been astonishing, and for once I am actually looking forward to playing Man UTD at home this season with the thought of getting three points not seeming so ridiculous.

I personally think that we should finish in the top ten next season, a few key players are needed but not much, especially seeing as our youth players appear to be developing to life in the premiership so well.

I also feel I gave Steve Bruce unfair criticism during our dry spell but I have to admit that this squad can play some excellent football on their day and for that Bruce deserves praise.

Definately. Myler & especially Henderson have been excellent. There are a couple of lads out on loan such as Colbeck at Ipswich who has just been voted their player of the season. Ryan Noble is another that should be pushing for a place on the 1st team bench.

Me too. I was however getting a bit twitchy mid season. Credit to Bruce(?) for turning round the form of players such as Steed.

It was a poor game today and we actually looked a little dirty. Hutton was a big miss (fking FA hate us appealing red cards don't they) although we were fairly solid at the back. I would have liked to have seen Jones start upfront alongside Bent, he just gives us something to aim for when we do the god awful punt upfield.

We didn't play badly but we didn't deserve a point either.

I would have liked to have seen more from Bent but Man U give us little space in attack.

Wolves should be a better game though, hopefully get something from that smile

Well, opening the times to the centre pages was a rather enjoyable experience today. Tony Cascerino's player of the season is none other than Darren Bent, and it's good that he's getting some recognition for single handedly scoring over half of our goals this season (dread to think where we'd be without him).

Looking forward to the Wolves game tomorrow, tenth is still very much possible if we can win tomorrow and with Stoke, Blackburn and Fulham all having some difficult games, all 3 losing isn't unlikely.

Glad to see Wolves stay up as I never understood the sacking of Mick when he was in charge of us, not when the club was on the bones of its arse in terms of money. Mick got us up on a budget but couldn't keep us up. Keane got us up with millions and barely kept us up and signed loads of deadwood.

No match of the day tonight, why couldn't all the teams just play today and get it over with frown

Well Bents made the initial squad of 30. Lets see if he can make the final 23.
He has got to have a fair crack in the two friendlies.

yes Pleased to see him in the squad, hopefully do enough to get into the 23 man squad. He has had a fantastic first season with us and was Tony Cascarino's player of the season which was nice to see biggrin

Edited because Cascarino is hard to spell!

Hi All,

First time I have looked in this section of the forum. Thought I would look and see if there was a Sunderland thread and it was at the top!!

Fantastic that Bent has made it into the 30 as he has had a fantastic season for us, as already mentioned.

All a bit quiet in here so...

What's your thoughts on Cana leaving? I'm a bit surprised but hopefully in the likes of Catts, Myler (when fit), and Henderson we have a decent midfield.

Anyone know what's happening with Colbeck? He has returned from Ipswich and will be wanting at least a place on the bench. Apparently we have had offers for him.

New strips? I personally like them. I'm not one for wearing them but I'd buy the away kit if they offered it without the Tombola logo. It looks like a nice training top without. Just bought the infant home kit for my 4 month old lad! laugh (although I am all for supporting the team where you were born which unfortunately means dirty Leeds. I can try though.).

And lastly...Sol Campbell in talks. Not sure what to think about this. Part of me started chuckling at the thought. However anyone remember the Steve Bould signing? Brilliant for the short time he was with us. Another 'problem' Bruce has with the centre backs is Silva is going to want a start. He's had a good WC.

I've missed all the transfer news, currently in Denmark so haven't got a clue what we're doing.

I only heard last night about the Cana deal, personally I'm not too fussed. He was hit and miss although he might have hit better form this season. He was a good player, I just think we have better options in CM (ones who aren't as much of a liability). Hopefully we'll have a fully fit Cattermole and we've got Riveros too, who had a good world cup. I'm back home the day of our first game so I'll be able to watch match of the day and see how the new signings or the young kids settle into the squad.

New home kit is nice, glad the white shield around the badge is gone. I'm hoping I can squeeze into an XL boys so as to avoid the Tombola, although I think they're logo is better than boylesports, at least it matches the colour-scheme more. Without the logo though, the kit looks fantastic so I agree with you there.

Sol could shore up the defence in certain areas. He's played at the highest of levels so his experience could help Turner develop into a smarter CB. If his wages aren't too bad, I see no reason not to sign him, Sol at the SOL thumbup

Cana sale was a funny one - no-one saw it coming. Think it's worked out well for all, though we need a fully-fit Cattermole now and him limping off in his first outing at Darlo isn't a good sign.

Da Silva was outstanding in the World Cup. I'd have him starting in central defence with Turner, although I like Kilgallon and think he can be a good player for us.

Glad Bent didn't go to the World Cup - he'll be fit and hungry come first day.

So, where do we think we'll finish? And will Angeleri ever get his work permit?!

I think we'll do a mid table again - stringing some brilliant performances together then losing a few on the bounce in typical Sunderland style!

Gordon has broken his arm again. He was singing the praises of the young new keeper (Migolnet) so I wonder if he'll be thrown in? Fulop was left out of the trip to Portugal so I'm guessing he's off. The only other keeper is Carson.

I do worry about Cattermole. He got injured a lot last season and seemed to be rushed back. No news on the website so maybe he'll be fine.
