I know that the boxer derv engine was pretty prone to serious issues. Was there a time in its life when the problems had been ironed out or is it just too risky?

From reading up the mk1 version of the diesel engine was crap , from around 2010/12 there were revisions and things improved but still some failures that were very random , some engines going strong at 200k miles , they are a lot of £ to get rebuilt as it’s normally a whole new engine

I had a 2014 forester diesel. Great car, no problems. Stick to post 2013.
