Already discussed the implications of this to the space program. I believe NASA are involved beyond just "keeping an eye on it"

Yup. It will be very closely watched, and NASA will be taking a very active part in it, because as you say, this will be looked at as one of the options for aborted mission, astronaut safety, etc. I have wondered whether if it was possible to 'escape' the ISS, or an orbiting platform, using a pod to enter the atmosphere, then parachute to safety, or something like that.

The early Soviet Vostok programme did just that, the Cosmonaut would eject from the reentry capsule about 20,000ft and land by Parachute.
