Not all rockets are fitted with a self destruct option.

Can't believe they didn't blow that up as soon as it flamed out. Actually yes I can.
As it dropped vertically back to the pad the radius of damage was probably less than if they'd blown it up mid-air

You think? had they blown it at the peak it wouldnt have caused any damage imo.

AFIK the florida range safety is now automatic, steps out of flight path or fails and boom.

I did hear that they were planning on making the Cape Canaveral rocket destruction system automatic but am not sure if the automatic system has been implemented yet.

The individual tasked with blowing up wayward rockets is called the Range Safety Office (RSO).

Neither the Russians nor the Chinese have such a system, which, in the case of at least one incident, has cost the lives of hundreds of people.

In expect they feel they need an automatic system when they start launching the Falcon 9 Heavy.

It was more a U.S. Air Force-driven project, because it'll cut millions off their infrastructure costs and allow more rapid turnaround times.

Apparently, the Air Force has to take several days to reconfigure its ranges & tracking gear between the various Atlas, Delta and Falcon 9 missions.

The rocket itself carries the automatic launch system & the Falcon 9 has been using it since earlier this year. United Launch Alliance have no plans to upgrade the Atlas and Delta rockets to do so.

I stayed up for the Ariane 5 launch after all.

It's a big, heavy rocket and seemed to take some time to lift off, even with two large boosters attached. Always impressive though and the commentary was as good as ever.

Apparently the two satellite payload set records for the heaviest (10 tonnes) and most valuable (Insured for $800 million) commercial payload ever put into orbit. They were both delivered successfully.

Another Ariane 5 ECA launch tonight. The window opens at 21.59 UK time.

It's taking a couple of communication satellites up - Inmarsat S-band/Hellas-Sat 3 & GSAT 17.

It'll be streamed here:

The Chinese are livestreaming one of their "Long March 5" rockets now. This is the CZ-5 variant, the largest version.

Watching. Is the commentary a private stream? If it is, it's quite good.
