NROL-52 delayed

"Extremely windy conditions associated with rain squalls coming off the Atlantic Ocean have forced officials to stand down with today’s launch attempt of the Atlas 5 rocket at Cape Canaveral. Liftoff is tentatively reset for Friday at 4:03 a.m. EDT (0803 GMT)"

Rockets don't like big side winds. They're not very strong in that direction.

On the subject of side winds, check out this footage of an Airbus A380 crabbing away,

Scrubbed again

"An S-band telemetry transmitter on the Atlas 5 rocket has failed and will need replacing before the NROL-52 mission can occur, delaying the launch at least a few days.

To accomplish the repair, the rocket will be rolled back to its nearby vertical assembly building to gain the necessary access to the vehicle's compartments.

This is the third scrub for the mission. Bad weather caused back-to-back postponements over the last two days. The weather was looking favorable today."

The Chinese launched a remote sensing satellite for Venezuela earlier today. Good to see a complete basket case nation who can't even feed its own people has its priorities in order.

The Japs also launched the Michibiki 4 navigation satellite today, designed to augment the GPS system over Japan.

The much delayed Atlas V (NROL-52) has been wheeled back out to the launch pad. They've clearly replaced the faulty AE35 unit.

It's expected to blast off in a night launch on Saturday (from 08:31 UK time).

Interesting that it retains the tube launcher from its ICBM past

Nope - all going OK so far. The satellite has now separated from the upper stage and the solar panels have deployed.
