They've smacked the stuck valve with a hammer now, so there's another try tonight - Weather is 90% GO.

7:48 pm EST (00:48 UK time) with a 40 minute launch window.

What a beautiful launch.

And another country joins the space launcher club.

Great launch !

Apparently the things ejected during 2nd stage burn were two of the three batteries used to power the turbopumps - the controller refers to a 'hot swap' event which is the pumps being switched to the third battery for the remainder of the flight.

Yes, well done. I managed to catch it live. It was initially postponed because of some retard in a boat going by. Not being China, they had to hold.

That also has to be one of the prettiest launch sites, along with that Japanese one.

With the US government shutdown, there's going to be some knock on consequences to US rocket activities.

Not directly for private companies like SpaceX, or the Air Force (which is funded separately), but on key federal civilian workers. This means that the 45th Space Wing can't support test fire or launch operations for the duration.

The longest government shutdown was under Bill Clinton in the mid-90s and lasted for 21 days.

From the 45th Space Wing website:

"If the government does not reopen by the end of the weekend, everyone will report at their regularly scheduled times on Monday, and we will begin carrying out an orderly shutdown and doing official furlough notifications. This day will be difficult on all of us, but know that I value all of you for the effort you make day in and day out. We simply cannot accomplish our primary mission of assured access to space without our incredible civilian workforce. This challenging time should not divide but unite us. My hope is that the furlough’s duration will be brief and become a mere speed bump in our Drive to 48 launches a year."

SpaceX were reported to be test firing on Monday and they may still be able to accomplish that. Who knows anymore.

45th SW provide communications necessary for static fire, so it won't be happening until the budget gets sorted out

Yes - the US is entering period of chaos. Donald's legacy might be that he brought a mighty country to its knees.

Holding the country hostage in order to get an amnesty for their pet foreign voters, is entirely on the Democrats. It's not good optics either.

Whether Trump laid a clever trap for them or the Democrats really are that stupid, I'm not sure.

DACA wasn't even due to expire until March IIRC. Dragging it into the current budget bill and filibustering is really going to backfire on them the longer it goes on. Despite the fake news running their usual defence for them, it will very much be seen as the "Schumer Shutdown".

DACA I might add. was so toxic that it had to be passed by Obama's executive action, because it wouldn't have passed Congress. Had it been passed as law, unravelling it would have taken a lot more than another executive action.

Republicans don't have enough solidarity to pass on the budget bill by themselves which they could as they have the numbers. This is totally not the Democrats problem.

The Democrats are the opposition party and strongly opposed to gop as they should be.

No, they need a 60% majority in the Senate to pass a finance bill, which they don’t have unless at least 9 democrats vote for it too.

In addition to building a small orbital rocket they put some leds in a box lol.

Hopefully won't ruin too many astro photos.

You can track it here. Doesn't look like it's going to be over the UK for a while and it'll burn up 9 months from now...
