At this rate, the universe will have expired through heat death before the JWST gets launched.

Sounds like the scientists behind it don't have a follow-on project in the works.

"The schedule slip will not add to the observatory’s cost or impact the telescope’s scientific output, officials said."

Whilst there would appear to be some avoidable issues there such as the valves, things like the sunshield snagging sound like a standard bit of aggro associated with developing something new like this.

If car manufacturers can make a mess of something on a new car using technology that is usually fairly well known then a spacecraft manufacturer doing something new can be expected to have the odd issue. That isn't an excuse for poor management but something people forget in this day & age.

Sometimes the new tech doesn't work so well the first few times around. I am old enough to have seen it happen a fair few times.

Wow - I just commented about the further delay on a Facebook post on the subject, and got a "why are you commenting, you're not even American" reply ! Had to point out that it's planned to be launching on a European Ariane V biggrin

And it's a joint project between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

Americans can be rather insular sometimes.

Most of the Americans I've spoken to, even those of a left wing persuasion, think it's the best thing we've done for years.
