I find this fascinating. I think among the billions of stars and planets it would be unusual for only 1 single planet to have life.

But they cannot be visiting us. If they are, they would have to be extremely advanced beyond us. Unless they are hiding in plain sight in our own solar system, its beyond our understanding of physics for it to even be possible for them to reach us. It needs either significantly faster than light speed travel ( not possible according to general relativity). Or the ability to create a worm hole.

As someone said above. You posses the technology to reach us, and yet do nothing but buzz a couple of planes. They are either going to be friendly in which case they would have made contact, or they are bad in which case we would have been wiped out by now.

As for the military sightings, surely its far more likely to be a foreign power testing ultra high tech stuff.

It also seems likely if a civilization capable of building craft to traverse distances measured in light-years existed, might they not simply send us an email instead?
Assuming it's us they want to see...if there's loads of intelligent life around then we are unremarkable and they might be here to see the blue whales, which are f***ing massive... or something equally interesting...laugh
Good point. smile

An interesting piece of whimsy from, I think, Charles Stross is that it might be that Earth possess something vanishingly rare, a moon that during a solar eclipse by a colossal fluke of geometry almost completely covers the face of the star leaving just the chromosphere and corona visible, and on the galactic tourist bucket list seeing this unique effect is something every self-respecting space excursionist would want to tick off - hence if you *really* want to see an alien, sign up for one of those eclipse tours, preferably somewhere really remote, and observe the rest of the party. Wears dark glasses all the time? Unsuitably heavy clothing? Socially awkward, unable to make conversation? Personal hygiene issues relating to whiffs of organosulfur compounds? Deffo an alien....or possibly just Keith from Epping on his dream geek holiday after sampling the local food the night before.

Perhaps our atmosphere is the galactic equivalent of the Nurburgring when you’re having a burn up in a spaceship.

If you’re arriving here, you’ve cracked FTL drive and have a view of the universe that is markedly more advanced that our own. It’s hard to imagine a species with that capability that then got picked up by something as primitive as a camera or thermal sight - so the whole “they’re observing our progress” theme feels wrong.

I suspect there is life all over the universe, but the distances involved make communication rather difficult. If some species had cracked FTL, it would be _everywhere_.

It could that we are just a zoo planet for the titillation of the rest of the universe.
Just like us packing the car up to go to West Midland Safari park they pack the spaceship up to have a tour round the earth zoo.

Long way to come without having a gift shop... Perhaps that’s what’s on the dark side of the moon!

Don't need a gift shop when you offer anal probing. Just look at Thailand... No gift shops but lots of tourists!

What a great name for an album! Then there could be a talky bit at the end saying something like "There is no dark side in the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun."

Are humans planning on sending an email to Mars, or are they sending spacecraft, drones, and working on sending people?

It's not the dark side - except when the sun sets.

Depends on which is the quickest method of making contact.

I’ve watched numerous videos on Space topics as diverse as gravity, to scale of celestial objects, to size of the Universe (observable), and yet we still have a variance of how many stars there in our own galaxy, from one hundred billion (bloody hell) to 2x that - and from a similar number of galaxies to two trillion (!)

Regardless of accuracy of numbers, the sheer size of Space is such that it is highly probable that multiple ‘alien’ life forms exist - some even in our own solar system, that a good percentage of those may be far more advanced than our own, but that they too, find the sheer scale of the Universe simply too large to traverse.

So, sad as it is, we may never encounter other life forms from outside this Solar System.

We're exploring 'in person' what is effectively our back garden. We utilize interstellar communication for longer-range activities, to answer your question.

Most people think it's likely there are other life forms somewhere in the universe, but they are not coming here in flying saucers.

Are we arrogant? Yep, of course we are, not sure how this is relevant though?

The universe is so big there could be sections with planets all in a cluster who trade like countries do, stat trek style. Never ending trillions upon trillions of stars with planets, the possibilities are endless. Imagine being primative, just invented a telescope and you can see a close moon like planet filled with different life, mental. Ofcourse its all just imagination. Life is out there, just we will probably not find it.

The bible, we are descended from God, we are in the shape of etc. Any aliens will naturally be humanoid.

I doubt they fly in saucers. Possibly not even on the same plane of existence as we know it. They could have complete cloaking devices that allow even holiday like visits.

Then again why would they bother to hide their existence.

We could equally be in the alien’s back garden.

But they would likely need to be in statis for hundreds of years, if not more. FTL travel seems impossible. The most likely method they would use is the ability to open and stabilise worm holes.
