Even after the last human of our current race has died, there will still be managers pushing paperwork around at BNFL Sell-off-a-field. Note having worked at that place, I do not class managers there of being of the "human" race.
Yes, but the ponds clean up will probably be nearing completion at that point wink

Remember reading about that one at work.

The one that always gets me is SL1 when the operator withdrawing a manual control rod, caused a criticality that blew the rod out of the core and impaled the operator to the roof.
I've got some photos of that accident on my work computer... Bodies were effectively treated as HL waste. I'll see if I can find them, they're SFW and public domain.

TBH given the practices in the 50s and 60s, and the lack of understanding of what they were playing with, I'm amazed more big accidents didn't happen.
Found the photos of the accident...

Summary and photos can be seen here if anyone is interested.

Thanks for that. I watched BBC's 'Edge of Darkness' for the severalth time last week. It's still excellent IMO and found myself wondering how they'd clear up the 'hot cell'.

From my very rudimentary understanding of nuclear fusion,

Good spot; amazing this wasn't nailed on the first page.

Fission (divide) - big atoms split to make smaller atoms. eg uranium (238), the atom bomb and nuclear power stations.

Fusion (join) - small atoms fuse to make bigger ones. eg hydrogen (1) = helium (2), H-bombs and the sun. Currently not controllable on Earth, though if it could be, the world's energy problems are solved.

Much more complex but that's the simple version smile

Just in time to start clearing up the stuff left over from the clear up. And chase a few contaminated seagulls.

...................and making a bit of space for that extra fuel from Heysham 1/2 now the Gubberment has given yet another couple of years runtime at Heysham (was it stage 1 got the extension?) and Hartlepool.

Sellafield will always go backwards programme wise. I worked there in the 1980s and buildings that were supposed to be clean by now are now looking at the NDA Website only due to be empty in the 2070s!

I live within 4 miles of the Manchester "nuclear" power station. (Grisley Risley). That has been removed, defueled and totally demolished, apart from a substation which is still boiler plated as "Nuclear reactor" but actually supplies 2MW to the frozen fish factory now on site there!

Stage 1 got the extension to 2026 +- 1 year

Stage 2 is 2028 +- 2 years
