I've even made a panorama of my garden and put it in there....
Now that sounds interesting. I have Stellarium loaded on my PC but would be keen to know how you did the 'personal' landscape bit.

Are you able to take a 360 panorama?

Hmm, not sure - my Android phone doesn't seem to be able to (Android 5.1 but phone doesn't have gyro/motion sensor), my Sony TX-55 can take something like 120 deg or 180 deg panoramas so can I stitch them together or do I need a 'proper' 360 deg photo?

You do need a full 360 to get the best effect, as in 360 degrees all the way around and up and down as well.

This would usually be done by stitching together 4 or 5 wide angle shots. I wouldn't have thought a phone camera would be wide angle enough in the vertical direction.

Do you have a 180 you've taken you can post here and I'll tell you if I think it's possible?

No problem.

If anyone else wants to get their own view into Stellarium shout out and I can do a short tutorial as it may not look very easy when you read the user guide, but it's actually fairly simple as long as you can get the panorama done.

Actually, don't worry about the built-in panorama function. I've looked at the camera spec and it's probably good enough to make a 'proper' panorama with.

If you can take the photos and send the originals to me (I'll give you an email address via PM) then I'll make a pano of your garden you can use in Stellarium.

I'm interested to see how easy it is to do it without the proper equipment so happy to use you as a guinea pig if you're up for it!

I'll explain here how to take the photos if you want to give it a go.

And a nice bright pass. I'll try and catch it again in 90 minutes.

Which I did. But this time it passed into shadow just after going directly overhead.

I watched it from 84 degrees at 6:09. It appeared from opposite than I expected, was heading towards 84 not from. But still saw it despite. It then disappeared half way across, don't know why.

It always appears in the western sky - because it's travelling around the earth from west to east.

On the second pass tonight it was eclipsed by the earth's shadow as it passed almost directly overhead.

I think you maybe getting confused? The elevation was 84 degrees from the horizon which has nothing to do with it's direction.

As Eric says the direction is always West to east - the elevation is how high up it passes over you. It's always between 0 and 90 degrees.

I anyone lives near York (in the UK), they're currently displaying the Soyuz capsule that Tim Peak used last year on his ISS mission.

It's in the main hall of the National Rail Museum, parked near the Mallard ....and of course, Stephenson's Rocket. cool

Ah, many thanks for the replies. Only just seen them. That explains why it disappeared. It did come from the West. I expected it to come from 84 degrees on the compasss, East. Didnt realise it was elevation. Every day is a school day! Thanks.

Bump.

Clear skies for me at last.

Tried to nab it tonight, not got to grips with the remote lead and fudged it but a good pass tonight, getting lower over the next few nights.

Edit. Early part of May looks a good run.
