Another vote for Plus Gas. Once you've used it once you will wonder how you ever lived with out it
I simply don't understand the love for PluGas, it seems like this is another Internet phenomenon like the Porter Cable DA polishers were a few years back. It works ok, but no better than numerous other penetrating oils.
Bit more than that; Plusgas IIRC won a test on penetrating oils a few years back in practical classics it works really well.
Indeed but all of them were beaten dramatically with ATF and acetone mixed!

PlusGas was THE stuff to use in the 60s but I thought it got banned from retail for some reason for a while.

Plus gas for penetration, WD40 for aftershave (just me who loves the smell then?)

WD40:
If you want a penetrating oil, Plus Gas or warm diesel oil are better.
If you want a light oil, GT85 or 3-in-1 are better.
If you want a nice smell, GT85 wins again.
If you want a water displacer, MucOff Bike Spray is better.
If you want to incinerate flies with a flamethrower, hairspray is better.

Can't think of a single good use for WD40. Overpriced, overhyped rubbish.

And yet many thousands of people continue to buy it and use it successfully. It is quite a popular pastime to denigrate it on forums however scratchchin

I believe it stands for Water Dispersant Number 40. It was the 40th formula tested and is virtually pure fish oil. Seems blindingly obvious when you think about it; how many fish get waterlogged? Allegedly you can drink it without harm, and it's also supposed to be good for arthritis and rheumatism. For getting stuck studs out I prefer to weld a nut to the top (the heat also serves to help loosen a seized stud) and then use my air wrench on low pressure to keep on hitting it gently in the right direction. WD40 is however a good general lubricant for cutting threads and spraying tools to prevent rust.

Your statement is rubbish! WD40 is a great all-rounder and, like mr2mike, I've been using it for years. WD40 may not be the best solution for any one particular use, but it's pretty good for a crazy number of things. I've used it for the following...

1. Spraying tools and other metallic items to protect from rust in storage
2. As a general-purpose cleaning fluid
3. To remove tar spots from paintwork
4. As a degreaser
5. To clean my hands of grime/oil/grease when I haven't bothered to put gloves on

Actually, I've never really used it as a penetrating fluid (although I have often doused a bolt with it out of desperation!) I find an impact wrench is the best remover of seized nuts/bolts (or the application of heat).

Overpriced? You can get the stuff for about £3 a can, or generics which seem equally as good for £2.

Such an urban myth that even the manufacturer believes it astounding!

One has acquired one's first tin of plusgas today in anticipation of a forthcoming exhaust exchange on my cooper s. The plusgas has arrived, the exhaust hasn't. We live in hope.

I find that used brake fluid is as good as anything...

Just don't get it near to any paintwork...
