My rear view mirror is no longer attached to the windscreen, thanks to a company that was supposed to be looking after it.

It's too heavy to be reattached to the windscreen with the "normal" adhesive you can get from shops. I took it to a BMW dealership, who claimed the windscreen needs to be replaced and quoted me £1k! Obviously I won't be paying that. Any ideas on what I should do?

You need to remove the boss out of the back of the rear view mirror and use a decent 2 part glue to stick it back on to the windscreen. Leave it 24 hours and then twist the mirror back on to the boss. That way there is not the full weight of the mirror pulling it back off.

Either that or find your nearest windscreen company, turn up at 8.30am and ask one of the techs loading their vans to do it for beer money.

as Ren says, the mounting boss needs to be separated first before cleaning both contact surfaces (removing any remnants of any crud or previous attempts).

Let me know where you are and I'll look through my contacts list to see who's close to you.

Even a BMW driver only realises how much he uses his rear view mirror once it's not there!

Thanks, Glassman. I live near Maidenhead.

Wouldn't it make sense to ask the company who are supposed to look after it to re-attach it?

Never had a rear view mirror fall off. Not even on a 20 year old Alfa.

Probably because you don't drive it and that it's been stuck in a mechanics garage getting repaired for the time you've owned it hehe

No, says the guy who always pops up in BMW threads to remind us how much he doesn't like them.

BMW glass bonding kit pt no. - 83 19 0 401 099... (which is two part araldite adhesive actually) of course there's much more profit in selling a windscreen though!!! biggrin
