hi. planning a large double garage build. would welcome views as to whether i should go for a pit or a ramp. the boss has approved the build but she is holding me to budget so i have to get it right from the get go.

A lift is much more versitile than a pit.

Ramp - pits are lethal. My neighbour had one - over a period it filled with petrol vapour, then one day when he was grinding it went bang......he was very lucky.

Ramp, every time. A two poster is more convenient for servicing the car but requires strong foundations. A four poster is kinder to suspension components should you wish to use it as storage.

100% 2 post ramp. I've just got one, it was £1350 fitted, and it's the best thing I've ever done. No more doing clutches for folk on the drive. You can get so much access on a 2 poster, the four posts I find are a bit of a ball ache to work with, doing transverse clutches or even suspensions stuff, plus the jacking up with the jack and all that. Good for storing cars on though like a previous poster said as the suspensions sits natural but that's the only positive in my opinion. I think you'd regret a pit, I've heard bad things about them.

I love my ramp 😬✌️ Great for storage to, drift car on the lift and any other I'm working on underneath. Brilliant things they are

I would go for a scissor lift countersunk into the floor.

That's what I've got and it's fking mint beer

great thanks. i was leaning to a ramp. thats made my mind up. any thoughts on the mobile scissor lifts ? pros and cons. i'm going to store a boat in there now and then so was thinking a mobile scissor lift may be worth a thought.

Yeh forgot about the countersunk scissor lift, got one of those at work and they are very decent. Only hinderence I've had is doing welding work on sills, and removing fuel tanks. If you aren't doing those tho they are every bit as good as a 2 post and a lot tidier in the work shop

I have an Automech scissor lift (7530 from memory) which is surface mounted but looks identical mechanically to their recessed lift - works well and seems robust, and they were very helpful with some queries when I first used it.

I'm going for the recessed scissor lift. Keeps the garage clear when not in use. 2post would limit space either side of it.

Some lifts create enough space for a car underneath and on top which could be useful!
