Informed advise sought, looking to purchase our lad a set of good quality rachetl spanner’s.
Not looking for cheapo’s but at same time not looking to pay OTT. Want the spanner’s to give a life time of DIY service. Recommendations please.

Ratchet spanners are either good or crap, you need to invest in the best you can.

I have had all sorts of makes and the best have been MAC and a couple of 30 year old Snap-On ones, all the other makes have failed so far.

Even halfords ones are about 50-60 quid for a fairly small set.

Thanks chaps, certainly looking for quality and not cheese. Expect to pay at least £10 per spanner. I will google some of the recommendations. Ta again.

Seriously nice spanners for the money. Not broke or seriously worn one yet in professional use yet ("lost" however is a different matter!)

The non ratcheting halfords spanners are pretty good too!

I’ve got a Halfords Professional socket set and am very impressed with the quality for my home spannering use (2 cars and three motorbikes, all self-maintained where possible).

I’ll be buying a set of those ratchets as soon as I can - I usually have to ponce one from my mate next door but would be good to have my own set.

Not keen on them myself.

IMHO they have three faults:-

1. Like USB plugs, 75% of the time I put them on upside-down

2. For nuts & bolts in tight places they are too big to get on them.

3.The hinged head type I find especially difficult to slot onto a corroded nut, and when I finally do... see 1.

Any use? https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/59...

I have a Lidl set which is fine for DIY use.

They asked for a receipt, I explained it was with the accountant and pointed out the branding on them...they were having non of it.

Not bought anything from them since which is a shame as their own brand spanners are decent.

I've broken a couple of Halfords ratchet spanners over the course of the 10+ years I've had them. Well I say broken, the ring that holds the nut cracked on one, and a couple are starting to slip. But, I'm not kind on them. I've never oiled them, sometimes left them wet, hit em with hammers etc so I think they're pretty damn good. Certainly the most used tools I have.

Used for general maintenance, total strip and underseal, engine swaps, etc.

Dave.

Get ones with floppy or angled heads.

I got some (cheap) flat ones, they're great on spring compressors when there's no room for an ugga-dugga, but that's about it, I always reach for a normal socket/ratchet or the ugga-dugga.
