Dewalt grinder - type 1 or 27 guard??
Discussion
Hi,
I’ve just bought my first angle grinder, the Dewalt DWE4206K and all the recommended PPE. I also bought some thin cutting discs, 115 x 1.0 as I want to cut some metal. I’m now wishing I hadn’t bothered - the instructions say I need a type 1 guard for cutting discs but I have a type 27 guard, and type 1 guards cost more than the grinder itself... can someone please explain what I’m missing here?
Thanks.

Just watched a DeWalt youtube which shows both types.

As others have said & having used various different angle grinders over the years, I too had no idea such a thing as the type 1 existed & have only ever used what they call the 'Type 27' style as that came as standard on all of them.
Works fine with cutting discs, grinding discs, diamond discs & the plastic backer used with the flat red abrasive sanding discs.
That the 'Type 1' is NLA says how much call there was for it!

Thanks, that video is exactly what I was referring to. Dewalt need to update their instructions in that case as they’re telling me to use a guard that you can’t buy.
I’d not normally be picking apart instructions but seeing as I’ve never used a grinder before I thought I’d better in this case.

Most of the YouTubers I see using grinders don't have a guard on at all, although I'm not advocating this. Obviously, eye protection is key here. Safety glasses at the very least but goggles are better.
My grinders (I've had 4 now) have always come with a Type-27 which is more enclosed than a Type-1, so inherently better? I dunno - makes it more difficult to see the blade at the point where you're cutting perhaps but it's never been any hindrance to me.

Depending on the work you're doing, a battery grinder is a thing of genius. I'm late to the party with this but I love my DeWalt - it's heavy, because of the battery - but it's definitely more useful to me because the battery. I bought the 125mm one - that little bit extra over the 115 gives me clearance from the body of the grinder that I felt was missing from the smaller one.
I'm after a bigger one now - a 9" (can't recall the mm) but for this, I'll go with a mains one as I'll be using this for masonry mainly, rather than underneath cars or other areas where the battery one wins.

Yeah many seem to not bother with guards.
I’ve decided to go with the BOSCH GWS 9-115 S instead and will return my Dewalt - not because of the guard but because it’s too heavy and long for what I need to use it for.
Sod that, seen enough pictures of the after math of disks breaking/shattering for taking any risks like thatI’ve decided to go with the BOSCH GWS 9-115 S instead and will return my Dewalt - not because of the guard but because it’s too heavy and long for what I need to use it for.
Decent googgles are a must too (I wear glasses so find them more comfortable anyway, 2 sets of glasses on one ear is annoying as anything)

If it's car work - bodywork or nut removal - in confined spaces where you can't get a normal size grinder I find my Dremel with the flexible extension & the mini cutting discs work well.I’ve decided to go with the BOSCH GWS 9-115 S instead and will return my Dewalt - not because of the guard but because it’s too heavy and long for what I need to use it for.
You need the discs with the fabric reinforcement - mini versions of the full size. Don't try & force them or twist as they'll break.

Yes the Dremel is next on my list - I’ve gone a bit mad over the last few months and have probably spent over a grand already on tools, might have to wait a bit before I can get sign off from the Mrs, or till she gets used to seeing these tools before I can sneak in a few others...You need the discs with the fabric reinforcement - mini versions of the full size.
