I last couriered van and bikes as well as mini cabbed back in the 80s in Central London. It was good money then until Black Wednesday or was it Friday in '88 I think. Then it went all down hill and I changed careers.

Now I live in Surrey and my current business is getting shaky thus I have a lot of down time.

I've just returned from the local council with the forms to apply for a Hackney Carriage licence. Looks like a couple of hundred pounds to be spent on a driving test, medical and various checks, plus a knowledge test to cram for, nothing as daunting as the Knowledge which I started back in '85 until I found I could make good money with a second hand Cavalier working for Addison Lee. Thankfully my already gained London experience allowed me to do well out of the Open Call radio system that ensured only those that knew the roads got the jobs.

The question I need to ask is what kind of money can be made by putting the hours in, or is it long periods sitting at the rank outside Dorking Station?

I could wander down and ask the guys and girls there but understandably I think they would not like discussing this with a stranger face to face.

Also I realise that all new applications must be made with a wheelchair compliant vehicle, so around £20k for a Ford Connect taxi version.

Many thanks for any help, cheers.
