I have my medical for a Class C LGV licence as i am now 50. My colleague has a C1 licence (upto 7.5 tonne) and will be 45 soon. Does he need to take a medical for C1 continuation? Thanks for your help.

Not if his licence is through "grandad rites"

Thanks for the reply Grumpy. Someone without Grandfather Rights would need a medical at 45 to carry on with his C1 commercially?

That I am unsure of , I think it depends which group his licence for C1 falls into if its group 2 yes he does if its group 1 he doesn't.
Mine falls into group 1 .
The medical legal responsibility is complicated in this category and I understand is under scrutiny.
Having medical problems that at the moment would bar me from retaining an HGV licence leads to some interesting reading .

Group 2 stuff is always very interesting and at times very bizarre, grumpy is right it is indeed under scrutiny but the DVLA/DMG are well known for not rushing things.

In the last 10 months of investigating my case the DMG have achieved speaking once to my old consultant and getting my files from the hospital, 10 bloody months.

Fortunately the I.C.A have now taken my case on.

LGV C1 gained by passing car test before 1997 needs a D4 medical at age 70 and is valid for 3 years

LGV C1 gained by passing a LGV C1 test requires a medical every 5 years from age 45 then yearly from age 65

Simple but daft

I have a pre 97 licence and a LGV CE
My D4 medical expires next year when I will be aged 60 and 4 months old
I am not going to renew it

I will be left with one of my C1s because at the moment I have 2 of them
