Any drivers of new HGVs? Can anyone confirm, is autonomous emergency braking mandatory on all new HGVs? I thought it was, but I was in a new-ish tractor unit recently and appeared not to have it (I'm not a driver).

I had a bit of a nose online but couldn't find a definitive answer.

I'm in a 68 plate Merc unit at work and this has it, as do the 67 plate Dafs we have. We also have a selection of other trucks going back to 11 plates, they don't biggrin

I'm interested to know now, so if I remember next week I'll pop in the workshop and see if I can find out for sure.

In both the Dafs and Mercs I mentioned that are fitted with the system it is a great idea, it is worth mentioning though that in both of these I have had the system momentarily kick in for no apparent reason. This apparently is a 'thing' and is only split second, but bloody hell does it give you a shock eek

It's been mandatory on trucks over 7.5t since 2015. There exemptions however, those with steel suspension as apose to air and 4 axle trucks are exempt as it apparently affect it's performance.

Nicky, do you have a link?

I can understand the steel over air thing, but how does the 4 axle thing work, (as in definition?)

4 axle trucks? On a unit this would only be for STGO stuff I guess, and on a rigid setup 3 axles would normally be the max, although 4 is def becoming more normal of late.

4 axles I fully understand if on a artic/drawbar setup, if combined.

Then there is the whole unit/trailer compatible thing....

How does this work in a job where almost touching every side is a part of the job?

We have two brand new (they were 6 months ago) Volvo FH750 8x4 170t GVW and they don’t have it, however my 2016 DAF XF 8x4 FTM 150t GVW does

Volvo is on air, DAF is on steel

I hate it to be honest, it picks up things when we are in places on a road we wouldn’t usually be with a normal load and has interfered whilst doing so. Even taking a wider swing than usual with an extender on can upset mine. As a result I usually switch it off

I turned down a brand new Arocs demo because the job is hard enough without having the vehicle interfere. The cameras for mirrors might be good, but I suspect that they will struggle in poor light and particularly with white balance, making them dangerous.

Is the regulation that gives the dates, exemptions etc.

It's going to be mandatory on cars in a couple of years too.
