That location looks very familiar, meadowfield industrial estate by any chance?

It may have an isolator switch fitted already as standard, have a good look near the batteries. It doesn't look in bad shape to be fair.

That’s basically Volvo FH2 Engine and running gear below the Renault cab, with Renault electrics.

I’m not a fan of them, but I can see the appeal, the cab was ahead of its time when first released in the early 90s

Find a local dealer with a testing station, these are currently suspended due to covid but I’m sure tests start again on 29th.

Great project, OSR outer wheel isn’t correct, so I’d fit it to the inside or replace it

Yes the photos were taken at meadowfield well spotted you have probably seen the truck in passing.
Not had a really close look to be honest but had not noticed the rear wheel was different, no doubt once I get to give it a really good look over other things will become aparent.

I've never been a fan of them either, (or any Renault truck for that matter). The cab always seemed such a faff to get in and out of.

I can certainly see them being a pain in the arse when you're in and out of the cab all day every day,many complaints of ripped and dirty paperwork as well as a few accidents with guys falling out of them even, yes thats a worry falling off the top step its a big one. As it's just a hobby for me aslong as I take care it's no hardship.

Reminds me of a time, a long time ago, taking a load of pallets up from the South Coast to Liverpool.

The truck was a lot bigger than my licence allowed but the boss had said pick it up and earn some money.

I pulled into a truck stop and a bunch of girls were waving at me. I waved back, opened the door and promptly forgot that I was no longer in my Transit, and thus fell in a heap on the dirty gravel floor.

So cool. hehe

The air tanks should have a valve on the underside normally with a ring fitted to let condensation out. You can drain the air by pulling this.

You don’t need a tacho for private use, that is regarded as ‘out of scope’ of the tacho rules. If it’s got a digital tacho you should set it to ‘out’ in the vehicle section of the main menu.

Most main dealers. and some larger hauliers, have MOT lanes these days. Don’t think the DVSA have any MOT facilities anymore. Just call up any main DAF/ Scania service place and book it in. Probably be worth running it through an MOT just to see what, if anything, is wrong.

There is a Scania Main Dealer only 2 miles from my unit so once I get my licence that will be my first stop unless I can get someone to take it for me?
Nearest Renault Truck Dealer is in North Newcastle.
I'm in Washington.

Live reasonably local but used to use CTS just down the road a lot for work till we changed suppliers. Recognised the workshop and yard with the car transporters.

For your MOT worth checking the council service direct yard if your still in that area with the truck as they have the correct testing facilities at that site for the council vehicles. Just unsure whether they do general public.

Forget the above just read your unit is in Washington.

Just had a look at these (and others) on eBay and am stunned to see how cheap they are! There's a wealth of allegedly roadworthy examples from a variety of manufacturers for £5k or less. Most of which are getting on for a million miles granted, but are they completely knackered at this price point or is there still some work left in them?

It's a Renault. Renowned for electric gremlins and reliability issues of that era. Newer ones are much better but still have the stigma even though they're on Volvo running gear underneath. The Magnum has long since had its day. Ahead of its time when it came out but those days are long over. Think it was the tallest tractor unit on the road at the time but the current Volvo FH, Merc big cab and Scania S series are surely as high (driving position at least), if not higher.

I'm surprised they haven't been exported to somewhere else in the world. I haven't looked at the specific examples on eBay but one of your issues is that even if there is some work still left in them, there can easily be a big bill waiting just around the corner, possibly amounting to a similar value as you paid for the truck. They are not cheap things to fix when they break and you can't bodge and make do like you would with a car.

I am a Renault Truck dealer. If you need any help please ask away.
I have a soft spot for an early Magnum but not got one yet. They have become popular with restorers across Europe recently. Renault themselves have the first and last ones made at the factory museum.
As previous posters have said you have the later Volvo running gear and Magnum cab. You will find the mechanics are easy enough to deal with...or a dealer will. The cab will be easier as it’s a late one but still some parts are no longer available. There is a lot going on in the cabs.
Setting up the cab suspension is best left to dealers who understand what’s what....get it wrong and it’s not nice to drive and not good for the valves etc. Get it right and the ride is very good.
I suspect that the ad-blue system and electrics will make your life complicated. Be careful how you jump start this... disconnect the batteries to charge.
Have fun with it though...the 480 is a good strong engine with very few faults. The gearbox is also fairly straightforward.

As said they are getting on and high miles, I know this one has not been pulling heavy loads at least for the last ten years probably 20T maximum and the owner has been fastidious about upkeep and maintenance, the interior is like a well kept car no scuffs scrapes or greasy marks anywhere.

Yes a lot of these are being sold for export, seemto be wellsought after in Africa and Eastern Europeasfar as I can see.

Thanks rangie999, I'm guessing you're no where near Washington that would be to handy lol.

Out of interest anyone got any idea what the fuel consumption will be when running solo most people claim to get between 6 and 10 mpg but thats when hauling a load.

I'd have thought it would make it into double figures quite easily. I'm not too hot on tractor units, they are not my speciality.

That's rubbish. We never run bobtail long enough to measure it but for reference my S540 Hiline 6x2 tag with empty tri-axle tanker does 14.5 mpg at a steady pace, mix of motorway and urban roads. The S-line big cab is about as big as they get over here so not very aerodynamic vs. a smaller cab. I'd say that 20 mpg should be doable when running bobtail so long as you're not doing grand prix starts away from the lights.

At bang on 44 tonne with 28,500 litres it's averaging 8.2 mpg but I'm pulling out of Clitheroe to Bradford and there's some seriously steep hills at Padiham, Accrington and over the M62. Does 9.5 on our Blackpool to Rochdale run at 44 tonne, which is mostly flat motorway except for a handful of short incline bits.

6 mpg is your foot-to-the-floor-everywhere tipper brigade out of the quarries.
