I have a C1 category many years ago from when I was in the Armed Forces. To be honest, I no longer need the C1 part, but I definitely need the B cat for my car.

On the front of my driving license it says the card expires at the end of the month and I have received a D47PU form through the post. The title of the form is “Renew your lorry and bus driving licence” and the return address is “Vocational Licence Section”

If I fill in and return this D47PU form, will it automatically renew everything, my entire driving licence including the B category? Or will it only renew just the C1 category and is B category a different application?

I tried to renew my B cat license online and it won’t allow me to do so, saying I need a D4 form

Also am I correct that I do not need a photo as it says on the top right hand corner, that no photo or fee is required. Even though on the bottom left corner has a laminated space for adding a photo and part 6 is “Signing a photo to verify identity”

To add to DVLAs confusion, the valid to dates on the back of the driving license card are completely different to the expiry date on the front of the card. The DVLA are not making this easy.

Thanks for the help.

Can’t answer the rest, but if you have an active passport, the DVLA will use your current passport photo which they will get from the Passport Office without any action on your part.

Your entitlement expiry date is on the back, alongside the group - usually when you are 70. The date on the front relates to your photograph. I have two C1 entitlements and renewed my licence as a 10yr 'car' licence, not returning a D4 to renew my vocational licence (which would have also renewed my car and bike categories, but for the 5yr life of the HGV licence). The 2nd C1 that came with my HGV licence has not been renewed but the acquired rights C1 entitlement has.

If you passed a test to get any LGV licence then simply not doing a D4 will mean they send you a new licence without it on

Get LGV back any time in the future by simply doing a new D4

DVLAs website wouldn’t allow me to use the online form just for a car licence. It looks like if I don’t do a D4 then everything will expire.

It seems strange that I need to use the HGV or LGV form to renew just my car licence even though I’m not fussed about renewing the C1

If you have a vocational licence then the VL department deal with it. There is a ‘fk it - just send a 10yr car licence’ box you can tick on the vocational licence renewal form.

It can all be confusing if you have multiple categories entitlement.
Photo update,10 years
Vocational update usually 5 years plus age variation on medical renewal
Then age renewal usually at 70 years .
There were plans in the EU for renewal every 5 years on everything.
If you needed CPC,ADR, digi card etc they were all on 5 year cycles .
A surprising number of people are running about with expired photo card licences.
DVLA are also well known for dropping categories off licences when they are updated due to change of address or renewal.
It's then up to the licence holder to provide proof of entitlement.
This can be difficult for older drivers who have held entitlement for many years because the DVLA have lost records for various reasons.
