I managed to get a nice night out up in the Peak District last week. Parked up in Castleton, then walked up to Mam Tor, across Brown Knoll, Kinder Low and over to Kinder Scout. Eventually we camped at the base of Kinder Downfall, just above the mermaids pool.
It's well off the footpath, and after we got to Kinder low we never saw another person. Couldn't have asked for a quieter more relaxing night, and a steady walk back to the car the next morning. I think it was about 10 miles each way.
I'll be back out again next week, somewhere in the Peaks and then possibly a Beach camp over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Looks and sounds like a great trip I've never done the peak district despite only being in Leeds, always find myself heading north to Scotland or The Lakes.It's well off the footpath, and after we got to Kinder low we never saw another person. I've recently found some interesting looking spots on the south coast so will likely try a night or 2 in the peaks on the way down

It was a good one, usually much busier but it was deserted this time...I guess I dropped lucky with timings. I live just outside Sheffield so the Peaks are on my doorstep, I'd love to do a multi day hike in the Lakes though at some point this yearI've recently found some interesting looking spots on the south coast so will likely try a night or 2 in the peaks on the way down

The tent is an OEX Phoxx 2 V2, It's a good little tent isn't it. My only gripe is having to put the inner up first. That wasn't much fun in Snowdonia last year in the rain.

I went on a Bushcraft weekend a last month. Not really my thing the whole making fires and eating plants but enjoyable.
Spent the first night in the Lanshan 2 and then got the bivvy out for night 2.

I usually prefer longer the longer Hikes, but have camped near the car on occasion. It usually depends what I'm up to the next day. I'd like to walk up Helvellyn via striding edge, then camp somewhere around Red Tarn. As you say though it will be busy at this time of year. I had planned on going to Wales and camping around Pen y Fan this bank holiday but it'll be a bit pointless with the amount of people around.
Does anyone use a hammock on long overnight backpacking hikes? I have hammock+tarp+bugnet+underblanket, but it's much bulkier and heavier than a backpacking tent + thermarest, so doesn't come out as much as I'd like. I think the biggest issue is the sleeping bag and underblanket is almost like carrying 2 sleeping bags.. it's proper chunky, but necessary for warmth. I'd love to do long walks with hammock overnight. Should I just get a bigger rucksack and man up a bit, or does anyone have any tips?

I'd like to walk up Helvellyn via striding edge, then camp somewhere around Red Tarn. As you say though it will be busy at this time of year. I had planned on going to Wales and camping around Pen y Fan this bank holiday but it'll be a bit pointless with the amount of people around.
Striding edge is one I've wanted to do a while, tried last year but the weather was a bit too iffy to risk it so ended up on a little campsite at side farm ullswater, have you done angle tarn? That's on my list for this year also.
Pen Y Fan looks brilliant, again never been down that end of wales, always end up in the north around Llanberis (I really do need to start looking south)

I use a hammock without an underblanket and don't generally struggle with the cold. 3-season sleeping bag, decent thermals + another layer or two.
