So I need to sell my MK5 Golf GTi - love the car, but new commute requires a white goods diesel automatic. Don't want to spend more than 5k and the dealer offers for my GTI are ludicrously low, circa 3k-3.5k for my 69k gti. WBAC have offered £4200 - the car probably needs £500 spending at the next MOT in a few months (cv joint, discs all round), and I wanted £5k privately. The market up in Scotland is a lot quieter than down south, so I figure 4200 is not bad at all, and I really don't have time to do a bunch of private showings, my weekends are worth more than that to be honest.

So... aside from a 1p ding in the boot and a scratch on one alloy, it's in extremely good condition.

What are people's experiences of WBAC chipping you down? How big a test drive and cosmetic examination is done? If they offer 4k and over I am fine with it, anything less and frankly I'd rather garage it until the summer for some fun down in the borders. Anybody had any relatable experience? I have searched the forums but wanted to get an up-to-date view now that they are owned by BCA.

Cheers!

Based on my personal experience of selling a MK5 GTI privately, don’t bother.

If you’re happy with the offer go down and see what they knock it for. I reckon you’ll end up with £4000. Seems decent, if you put it up for £5000 you may possibly end up selling at £4500 if you’re lucky.

WBAC works when it works, when they want your car.

To be honest, with a car that age, I’ll be amazed if they offer £4000. It will more than likely be similar to the trade in values you already have.

I’ve used them twice and both times they picked up on tiny stone chips and a few very light scratches that were barely noticeable. They also go round it with a paint gauge.

They chipped me for £400 on one car and £300 on another. That was after a bit of haggling. Both cars were in excellent age related condition.

The test drive if you want to call it that, consisted of driving it round their car park for all of 30 seconds.

WBAC valuers work on commission for knocking money off your car when you bring it in for inspection. I think that should answer your question.

Write everything down to get your evaluation correct and they won't chip you down at all. Write an exhaustive list.

Try an Evans Halshaw site, I think they pay a little more. My brother in law sold them his A6. DMF was on the way out, he skimped on servicing, dent in the wing. Still got a very good offer on it.

I want to buy privately, hence avoiding going to a dealer to trade in. It's v quiet up here and way less choice - down south I wouldn't have much of an issue selling it for 5k. I'm not going to lose sleep over a £500 difference, but at the same time I don't want my Saturday morning wasted as the other half won't be impressed smile

It has body damage and needs work, its a minimum of 9 years old, how much are you expecting for it ? sounds like a grand needs spending to get it right.

Do you have Evans Halshaw? I sold my R32 Golf to them. They guarantee more than WBAC (maybe only £50) and when I took my car in there was no quibble.

If you fill in the online form correctly and fully so there is nothing to chip the car on then they won’t be able to knock anything off. Simple.

But first of all why can't the Golf do the commute?

To answer the commute question, it's very very slow stop-start, and it's hilly as hell for the first part. My clutch foot is knackered and the mpg is through the floor. I also need something with a bigger boot for my little one, so looking at insignia/mondeo etc.

I have listed the couple of small cosmetic things (and they honestly are small). After a valet the car looks really good, and it has things that WBAC I am sure aren't interested in (2 owners, FSH, very low mileage for age, totally unmodified, passed last MOT with no advisories).

I'll head down and see what happens. We're talking a max swing of £500 here vs private as I would need to spend that to get things done before the next MOT, or reduce for a buyer if they were doing it themselves. Also, the market is just quiet, and I don't have the driveway to have 3 cars. Could garage it but would prefer not to.

Have tried EH - they offered £3700 but they promise to beat the quote so will book and see for the same day!

To give WBAC a positive note, they gave my dad £50 more than their online quote, six or so years ago, for his 110K miles A6 saloon 2.8q. It was the low owners (2) and full Audi service history that got the thumbs up.

Try We Want Any Car as well.

I got more through them, sold 2 cars and both times a positive experience.

Been a few times to WBAC and they always end up knocking another £600 off it for absolutely nothing. Always a last option for me. saying that it is easy in and out in 15 mins.

I would suggest them as well, sold 2 cars through them, apart from a £15 reduction as the milage had gone up by a couple of hundred miles from the valuation date, no issues at all, would sell to them again.

They will probably knock off more but you're not obliged to accept the offer - you can drive away. As you say, though, none of those no-shows and random texts with "wots ur best price" or "giv u 3500 its not worf mor dan dat".

Booked in at a couple now, all seems to be offering 4000-4200. First one to stay over 4k will get it unless someone buys it privately this week. Will report back thanks everyone!

I've used WBAC and Evans Halshaw. WBAC was quick and seamless. EH took forever and whilst I got a bit more money, it was debatable if it was worth the hassle.

In both cases you have to remember to be completely honest with the online appraisal. It's human nature to always think your car is immaculate and the best there is and you should be paid lots of money for it!
