Hi everyone, needed some advice before I start making these probably long and stressful phone calls. To try and cut the story short I had a leased vehicle on which I applied my cherished number plate, this was in 2015. In 2016 I decided to cancel my lease 6 months early and pay the termination fee. I sent the relevant payment and form to DVLA for retention of the registration. I did not receive any letter to confirm it is now on retention and after inspection my vehicle was taken whilst still having the physical plates still attached to the car. I thought because I still have my certificate and there has been no further response everything has been done smoothly until 2 days ago my friend used the 'MyCarCheck' app to find my registration is currently on a white 2017 VW Golf which I'm sure you can imaging shocked me. Anyway I would just like to know If anybody can advise on where I stand with this. Thanks.

How did you send the payment to DVLA? Can you check it was accepted
Phone DVLA?
If you had put it on retention you should have had a certificate and a reminder

So you never got a retention certificate?

That means your plate wasn’t retained (to you anyway) and is no longer yours.

Tough break but it’s gone.

You let somebody else put your plate onto their car while you used it.
When you gave them their car back, you didn't get the paperwork to show they'd taken the plate off their car.
Now, nearly two years later, you're surprised that you don't have your plate any more?

Really...?

What "certificate" do you have, if you never received anything from the retention? The previous retention cert? If so, that was cancelled when you asked the lease company to put it on their car.

I would expect that DVLA did not process your retention request because the plate was on a car which was not registered in your name.

Hi OP

Was the car registered to you or to the leasing company?

If the car was registered to the leasing company then you should also fill in your name as the "Nominee". You can only do this on a postal application as there is no provision to add a Nominee as part of the online process. You would also need the car registration document to do this. Did you have this, or did someone at the leasing company apply for the retention on your behalf?

The retention certificate will then go back to the registered keeper which maybe why you haven't received it. If the RK is the leasing company then they would normally forward it to you so that you, as the Nominee, can apply your reg to your next car. This is a common occurrence and the leasing companies have processes in place to deal with it.

It is possible however to use "your" retention certificate to assign your number to any other vehicle registered to the same RK ( in this case the leasing company ) which is possibly what has happened in this case, whether accidentally or deliberately.

Assuming that the car was reg'd to the leasing company, I would give them a call. If the car was reg'd to you then ask the DVLA what has happened to your retention application.

TLDR If car was reg'd to leasing company then tell them what has happened. If car was reg'd to you then call DVLA

Hi thanks to everyone for the replies I didn't really know the process as by chance it was my first experience with leasing and also with registration plates. The vehicle was registered to the leasing company. When I applied the number plate they sent me a v5 certificate which I could use as a nominee for DVLA. When I requested the retention they (vwfs) charged me a £50 admin fee which was taken by direct debit and I sent the application to DVLA with an £80 cheque. After this I didn't get any further correspondence.
