Motorhome hire, Uk-Italy in 3 weeks...?
Discussion
Good morning campers,
My good lady has decided that since I’m currently a gentleman of leisure we should up-sticks & take off to Europe for a few weeks in a motorhome once the schools kick out.
Despite the late notice I have found a few available vans but there seems to be a confusing amount of websites in the uk, But it’d seem £1k per week seems to be the going rate in peak season, is that about right?
It’ll be the first time for us & the kids in an rv and having never toured Europe I was wondering if we need to pre-book campsites or just turn up?
How does everyone else do it?
Lastly do you think is Uk-France-Sicily-Uk is doable in three weeks?

Hmmm - £1k/week seems a bit light. You might want to check mileage limits and european insurance cover costs.
Finding sites shouldn't be too difficult and I wouldn't worry about booking more than a couple. www.campingcard.co.uk will be your friend for research etc
My concern with that trip is London to Sicily is 1700 miles each way so you are looking at doing 3500 miles in 3 weeks.... 1000 miles/week is a long way and do you really want to be spending all that time on the road?

We've done it before in 3 days but it was a bit of a mission, I was figuring on a week in Sicily being more than enough time to be spending with the family, giving us a week to get there and a week to get back with a few stop offs on the way to visit friends etc...
You will be going quite a bit slower in a motorhome than a car, so it's going to take you longer to get where you want to be. Tell me to mind my own business, but why do you want to go all the way to Sicily ? There are loads of bits of Europe which don't require such a distance to travel. As far as booking sites, I've booked some at the start of our holiday this year and left the end a bit more haphazard - remember it's peak season, so the popular places get full and often stay full for the duration (I think Denmark and Holland are empty in July / August)

I see your point Chopper.....
Gaz is correct, Father in law was Sicilian and died last year so not only is it important to go and pay our respects (I wasn't able to attend the funeral), we also want to see the family and visit some friends en-route.
Plus when my wife was little they all did the journey down in a VW & she's keen to recreate the trip with our kids, and since I'm between careers at the moment we have some time on our hands, & if/when I start a new job I won't be able to take holiday for a while.
Current plan is to blat down as quickly as possible possibly via Naples & the overnight ferry, spend a week and then take our time coming back.
If we can find a van...

We did it 1998 in a brand new S reg Rover 200 that my employer foolishly gave me, I spent the next few months massaging my mileage sheets.
However I also remember trying & failing to sleep in it, a camper will be much better for overnight stops for the blat down.
Once we’re there we’ll spend a week seeing various family members in various locations, & also actually seeing some of the sights, something we’ve never really done before...
Phase 2 of the journey is visiting various mates & some nice campsites on a more relaxed 10ish day journey home.
I looked at the Genoa-Palermo ferry but it’s about £1k with a cabin, we might get the Naples boat one or both ways, we also did it in 98, just as Italy was getting into mobile phones, bloody things were going off all through the night crossing...”PRONTO!”
Anyway, stuff it! We’re off on an adventure!

Why not buy an older motorhome for say 7-10k, do the holiday and then sell it when you get back. Yes okay it comes with some risk, but get decent breakdown cover which isn't expensive, do the trip, get most if not more of your money back when you return or just keep and enjoy!

On French toll roads it would be class 2 which is one up from a car, provided the MH is under 3m tall (and under 3500kg). We are over 3m tall - just - and a pleasant "Classe deux s'ill vous plait" always works
From memory I also had no issue on Italian roads either when we went there 4 summers ago.

TBH it's pot luck what you get at each toll barrier ,might get a person or a self service machine.
The sign showing a manned booth isn't always true.
I can never remember which way the Euro notes should be fed into the auto machines.
Just keeps rejecting it until you get it right.
Op just rent a telepass, makes life a lot easier, (especially on the Milan ring road). The sign showing a manned booth isn't always true.

They have put prices up this year but are essential kit.
Just drive straight through.
