Right, i'm off to pick up my new (to me) estate car tomorrow. Going to f*ck off up to Scotland and hopefully have a few stop offs on the way up and down from the garden of England.

Thinking of roughing it in the car when I find nice out of the way places, the odd nights cleaning up in BnBs. Using cafes/McDonalds for number 2's.

What things do I need to take with me ? Thinking -

  • bed/mattress - saw some people suggest air type camping mattresses recently but can't find the thread - recommend ?
  • sleeping bag - GOT.
  • pillow - GOT.
  • gas stove for brewing/cooking - recommend ?
  • pot
  • mug
  • spoon large and small
  • water container
  • plastic boxes to keep food in
  • someway to keep a pint of milk chilled/packet of bacon - recommend ?
  • string - no idea why
  • a pair of clothes pegs - maybe 4
  • duct tape
  • lighter
  • plastic bags for putting wet clothes in
  • tissues for when I get lonely
  • wet wipes
  • outdoor chair

Do I really need anything else ?

Aldi or Lidl were selling camping mats quite cheaply recently, should be good enough for what you need.

Pretty much any gas stove will do the job, you'll need a pot or two as well & some way of cleaning them. Any unbreakable mug will do, preferably one with a lid.

One of those eye mask things would be handy, will get very light quite early sleeping in a car, foam ear plugs may be useful too.

12V cooler to plug in while the cars running?

An LED light of some description may be handy, a torch or head lamp possibly.

And a multi tool - you always need a multi tool hehe

How about a little detour on the way north and stop off at one of the Alpkit stores?

or

Decent kit and will sort you out with a air mat, stove and cooking bits.

Self inflating air matresses are good, they have a foam inside them that expands to inflate them and they you just need a couple of breaths to finish inflating them. Thick inflatable air mattresses don't insulate all that well.

Washing up bowl, small bottle of fairy, cloth and a tea towel are useful.

I like proper food rather than tinned crud so carry a small chopping board, a sheathed kitchen knife, wooden spoon and spatula. I always carry an espresso pot and a tub of ground coffee when camping.

If you're always going to be camping by car don't bother about compact lightweight kit. I have an MSR Whisperlite stove which is excellent, packs down really small to fit in my panniers and runs off petrol so I can siphon fuel from my motorbike, but cheap gas one will be half way through boiling the kettle but the time I've put it together, primed it, and got it burning properly. A couple of friends have this kind of thing and they're great. https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/gosystem-dynasty-comp...

self inflating camping/roll mat is what you want, about 1.5in thick.

Unroll and they self inflate to a point, then just chuck 3 or 4 breaths in to finish it off.

One of the best camping things ever.

It's also worth spending a bit more on a quality tent, it will last longer and keep out the strongest of weather. My Coleman touring tent has been epic.

Halfords do a good, powered cool box that you can most likely plug into your boot power socket.
I've got one and it keeps things ICE cold - will last over night with power off too.

They saved me in the Austrian backcountry when one of my snowboard bindings broke. Was able to ride out of somewhere that would have taken hours to hike out, which could have gotten kind of serious.

Swear by the little plastic beauties.

Kettle.

Pan and/or frying pan.

Powerbank if taking anything that needs charged up so not using car battery overnight.

Bucket (fill with cold water and use to keep stuff cool if you don't get a cool box).

Coffee sachets so you don't have to take milk?

Kitchen roll.

I take Nescafe Azera sachets wild camping, they're not too bad.
