I am guessing most are based on Ducatos (and variations of the Ducato) because of the massive range that they can be supplied in to the motorhome manufacturers. These include cab only, cab and varying chassis is varying lengths, chassis and engine / dash.

Whilst ours is the latest Ducato as a base (A-Class version, so Chassis / Bulkhead / Engine / Dashboard etc) its actually quite a decent thing to drive.

Only just coming to this.

A lot of premium motorhomes (Concorde, Morelo, Pheonix and I think N&B) now have the option to spec a marine black tank with macerator toilet. They're still somewhat misunderstood in how you deal with them but effectively they get dumped in the same place as your grey water. There are only two drains in the UK and Europe - storm drains and mains sewerage. Grey water dumps at campsites still join up with the mains sewers. So a black tank is literally emptied straight into the grey drain and generally then the grey water emptied immediately thereafter to wash it all away.

As with everything, there are pro's and cons to both.

Personally I'd prefer a marine black tank as I'm a big fan of wild Camping and I find the toilet is the main restriction in terms of getting away and staying off grid for as long as possible. I carry two toilet cassettes, which gives me maybe 4 days (max) with two adults. Whereas with a black tank the likes of Concorde fit these days, I would be away for 10days+ before emptying, which together with careful use of the fresh water, means I could really make the most of being away for a good week plus without worrying about resources.

I don't think your fellow campers, including me, would agree that it is okay to dump the contents of a black tank in the grey waste point!

It’s why I stick to a campervan. I have absolutely no desire to carry my crud around with me and handle its disposal. Keep an emergency ‘bog in a bag’ in the boot, never had to use it.

The point is, you’re dump the black together with the grey into a sewer which is designed for it – it does not offend and no-one would ever know. The grey point joins the same Elsan sewer and we're not talking about the grates you just drive over to dump grey or the little grey drains which caravaners empty their roller jobbers into, we’re talking the motorhome disposal points which have a manhole adjoining the grate. It’s there you stick the pipe down and empty it. No-one is disturbed by it and there’s no environmental impact from it (as it’s the same sewer system). The chances are, you’ve been at plenty of campsites where people have done it and you’ve never noticed as it’s not the issue most people think it is.

I find the cassettes quite convenient really, and not too rank when refreshed frequently. The on board tanks seem to be a faff when I've watched folks emptying them, having to take the mountain to Muhammad, and particularly handling and coiling that st hose vomit

OP

When you use a hose system where you have to open a manhole/sewer cover or even where you have to park over a grate - then for those moments you are BREATHING IN OTHER PEOPLES st.

If you empty a cartridge into a WC you are BREATHING IN YOUR OWN st.

I know which I prefer.

Case closed.

Having had caravans for decades with the Thetford cassettes & for the last 4 years a couple of American 5th wheel's with integrated black & grey tanks I can definitely recommend the tank system. Once you are familiar with the procedure, black tank first followed by galley (kitchen sink) tank then the bath water, this flushes through the st & keeps the hose clean. The only downside is that there aren't enough campsites that have easy access dump points, if you carry a macerator you can use that to pump to the dump point if it's too high for gravity. Also as the tanks are vented there's no need for chemicals as the natural bacteria break everything down in a very short time, even "luxury" grade toilet paper! We have managed over 2 weeks & could probably do 4 at a push on the black tank although if you use the shower every day the grey will struggle for a week. I keep manhole lift keys in a locker, there's always somewhere you can find.
