A long while since I camped but under current circumstances it might be an option. I am getting some reluctance from my wife on the following

Decent toilets
Decent showers
Power

I am pretty sure I can handle the power with an inverter generator but what are camp sites like about the noise of these although they are pretty quite

Toilets and showers Any suggestions for camp sites with good facilities We live in the Northwest but distance really isn’t a problem.

Also what solutions are there for toilets in the middle of the night, I am of an age where I would need to go at least once or twice.

I know I am not the only one looking at camping as an option. I really want to do it but I do understand I don’t need the same comforts

Thanks

I went here with the kids a couple of years ago: http://www.callowtop.co.uk/

The toilet block was quite good for camping standards and there are showers. The bar wasn’t too bad for food and ashbourne is within walking distance. It was just over an hour from Manchester if I recall.

With regards to the toilet requirement, take a bottle, saves a trek to the toilet block!

I normally camp wild. Toilet is a shovel and a hole. Your wife will love it.

A bucket can be a helpful night-time aid for those of us of a certain age! All decent sites have proper shower blocks and they are generally well cleaned and in good order.

What do you need power for? You are getting away from it all. If you need to charge a phone then use a battery pack or charge it in your car. Other campers wont appreciate a generator running all day.
Toilets and showers depend on the quality of the site and how much you are prepared to pay. If you are thinking of going this year you may have missed the boat for the top sites, many are booked up already.
Camping is all about leaving it behind, fresh air, al fresco cooking, fresh air and being outdoors, it's not for everyone, but if you are happy to leave the comforts of home behind it's great.

Thetford Porta Potti is a more civilised solution to a bottle or a bucket. If you're camping and not self contained in a campervan or caravan, a good ablution block is a must.

Many campsites these days offer premium pitches that have power. You will need a cable with a special blue plug (commando type) to connect to the power outlet. These cables are available with a standard 3 pin 4 block extension on them..like this:

Most decent campsites also have decent facilities.

If you get caught short in the night you could have one of these camping toilets:

Or as others have suggested, use a bucket and slop out in the morning.

So you can buy portable camping toilets - which have cassette waste sections.

We’re getting one for this year 2 reasons
1. Middle of the night requirement
2. It’s totally covid free.

We also have a portable shower. All you need is a bucket and warm water then you drop one side of the shower head into the bucket press the button and it sprays you just as a shower does. Takes a few minutes to empty a bucket of water which is plenty of time for one person.

Electric pitches are more but you need it for phones tablets and also for LED tent lighting (else you’ve loads of battery powered lights which don’t last very long). Oh and the tent heater you need power for that.

A few years ago we couldn’t get a hook up so charged stuff in the car.... had to then bump start the car... charging stuff really drains a car battery.

The National Trust site in Langdale in the Lakes is good with clean shower and toilet facilities. You can also hire a pod or yurt if camping is not sufficiently glamping.

Tent heater? You take an electric heater camping? Put another jumper on!

What the fk are you charging or using that drains a car battery in a day?
Its camping MTFU, extra clothes, cup of cocoa and watch the stars in the fresh air .

It sounds like your wife doesn’t really want to go camping and is making excuses. If that is the case, you probably want to seriously consider not going camping.

As Bristolracer correctly points out above, camping isn’t for everyone. We don’t like leaving comforts behind, but if possible want our holidays or breaks to be more luxurious than being at home.

I have been camping 3 times in my life, and hated it so much that I have vowed never to try it again. Fortunately my wife also hates it, so that makes things easy rofl

Quite; if you're that attached to electric things stick to hotels and B&Bs or buy a caravan.

I have slept in a tent one night in my life. Calling it sleeping is being generous as I had violent diarrhea. The kind they joke about on South Park. Camping and toilet torture are not good bed fellows, literally. I will never sleep without good facilities again.

Whilst Welshie may indeed hold the record for the number of ridiculous posts, in this instance I agree with him. At either end of the season the evening temps can drop right down and a heater make things much nicer.

Tent heaters are fantastic if you're camping with young kids at the far ends of the season. No shame in it, if it's the difference between getting one more weekend away or staying home.

It's easy to mock and be macho if you only go camping in the summer months. I suspect those mocking have never needed a tent heater because they're fair weather campers who have never seen snow on the roof of their tent or frost on the inside, not because they're especially tough.

Besides, if a few creature comforts encourage others to go camping who might be otherwise reluctant, then what's the harm?

We've been known to leave the tent at home and book a wooden hut/wigwam instead. Doing that in summer is considered "glamping". Doing it in late October in a howling gale is just common sense. smile

A few things I'd recommend that make our camping experiences much better

- Weber Q Gas BBQ - Small gas bottles, instant light, very portable
- Coleman Octogan tent - Big enough to stand up in, really easy to put up, fits a double blow up bed and all our stuff without a problem
- Eurohike Mobile Mains kits - keep everything charged - Car is fine if you're in the car all day but if you're cycling the next day or only driving 2 miles not so great. Also you can take a much better lamp (Why are battery LED Lamps always such cold light?)
- Powered cooler box (Aldi & Lidl have good value ones) - Camp sites usually have freezers so you can swap out freezer blocks in the morning/evening and with the power, keep everything nice and cold - a cool bottle of wine on a warm summers evening? Yes please
- Duvet in place of sleeping bag & Plenty of pillows and blankets - makes a tent a home!

Easy, you say distance isn’t a problem!
Camp abroad, warmer, generally better facilities.
Tried this with my then girlfriend 16 years ago.
Now married with two kids...we spend 3-4 weeks of the summer under canvas in the south of France. Hook up means fridge which means chilled wine and ice cream!

Camping in the uk means more jumpers and some rain gear. Make sure you have a tent you can stand up in.
I don’t bother with electricity here.

In summary makes sure there are enough creature comforts.
