Does your knocking 10mph off everyone else’s speed because they can’t get past you matter? Yes.
Last year on the way to Cornwall I was towing our caravan along the A35 came up behind someone dawdling along approaching Chidock and had to follow them. The traffic built up behind me. I think the stuff behind me was quite surprised when we came to the dual carriageway just outside the village up the hill towards Charmouth and I accelerated and overtook the car in my way!

When I used to tow, and now in our campervan, I'm still generally away cleanly at the lights and make good progress. I think the problem with people who think caravans are a problem is that it's not occured to them that the caravan isn't the problem. The tower is a dawdler, and they'd still be dawdlers without their caravan, but the caravan isn't blamed when it's not with them. I think a lot of caravanners are dawdler types though, disproportionately so.

We moved from a tent to a caravan as my wife wasnt that keen on a tent and there was a caravan for sale on a site we were staying on. I told her to enquire about it thinking it would be too expensive! She came back saying it was £500 or near offer. £400 later I had to drive home towing the camping trailer, then drive back to tow a caravan home! We had that caravan for 6 years and sold it for £750!

As others have said the important things about camping are quality kit! A decents nights sleep is the most important bit! So a campbed, or an insulation mat under the airbed, a tent you can stand up in, hook up. Check reviews for toilet facilities. If unsure about it all you could try usung Eurotent or similar where its all supplied ready to sleep in! At least you wont have bought the kit then if it doesnt work out

All this issue about holding up traffic - the smart way is either leave in the evening or 3am so you arrive there missing all traffic.

Most sites will not be ready to accept you late or early usually so plan ahead / things to do on the day of arrival.

If you are towing a caravan or even a trailer, and even with a car full of stuff, planning to do things is a challenge. For a start where do you park, a caravan wont get in to height restricted car park, many are also longer than a car so they wont fit in a car parking space or even two. Even with a trailer many car parks wont allow you to occupy 2 spaces. Then there is the security issue of leaving a loaded car, a caravan or trailer parked up whilst you do something else and the risk of someone stealing it or the contents.

We get round it by going to a site that allows you to arrive any time between 9am and 6pm (later in the peak season) and booking an extra night when we leave so we can leave in the evening.

We do the same book an extra night.

A couple of years ago we were early afternoon barely half way through packing up and the site mgr came over with new campers to take our pitch. / challenging the deadline had past - I provided the invoice that she had given to me showing the extra night, she asked why have you paid for an extra night? We know it takes so long to pack up happy to pay for another night and take our time/no rush.

Likewise we go for the extra night, mainly because Mrs PT isn't really a morning person, too many close calls getting off a pitch at 10:59am with an 11am cut-off.

We tend to pack up at our leisure, go out and do something for the day, return to site, hitch up and travel back when it suits us, traffic is lighter etc.

Just need to be wary of the site rules on vehicle movements after a certain time of night etc.

I think last time we had a late get up then a huge fry up then gradually packed things away (well over 4 hours...).
Popped down to the beach and then had a 4 hour drive home kids fast asleep all the way.

Oh and KFC drive through

Came out a petrol station on the A303, in the dark, thought I had to turn left to get back to the 303. Found myself in a McDs car park when towing 7metres of caravan. Only option was to reverse in to the drive through to turn round to get back out! It caused a reasonable amount of chaos!
