I suspect he uses a DE razor. smile

I'm reading Reacher at the moment and am quite enjoying it - not a hard read and pure nonsense. Perfect.

1. Reacher drifts into town
2. Meets a slim woman with a tanned and firm physique just visible under her white cotton shirt.
3. She needs help
4. He kills the baddies
5. Reacher drifts out of town.

I hope I haven't spoiled it for anyone.
^^^^^ is the basic plot of all Reacher books. TBH I really enjoy them, they are no more puerile than Flemmings Bond books or many of Ludlums books. Great easy reading, good action, ofetn a slight twist in the plot.

Tom Cruise............ fking stupid idea

well thanks to this topic I read the first.....decided it was good fun and have now read the first 9 or 10.

really enjoyed em...

I dont actually have too much a problem with choosing Cruise. i know he's meant to be big, but really the relevant thing is about his attitude and approach....i think the trailer suggests Cruise has got that down pretty damn well.

Been an avid Reacher fan since the first book was launched, indeed I've met Lee a couple of times and have most of my copies signed.

They're great escapism reading and I always eagerly await the latest release... that said though, I have noticed that the unnecessary violence has increased in the last few, time was Reacher only whupped the ass of those that needed it, lately he's been a little more indiscriminate.
Hopefully this isn't a portent of things to come.

As for Tom Cruise, don't get me started.

Particularly in 'The Affair', which is actually a prequel to all the previous books; I don't think I'm spoiling it to say he cold-bloodedly kills someone instead of parcelling him up for the authorities.

Yep, twas that scene that crystalised the thought that had been lurking in my mind that the style of violence had changed.

Saw the film last night. Disappointing in that it wasn't very much in keeping with the novel or character, though as a standalone film it was okay. 3 stars-ish.

I only really read before turning the bedside light off...still manage an hour if the book is good!

I expected it to be bad. It stank. The action sequences were to bad as to be funny, the endless car chase where he had dozens of crashes was painful, the dialogue was stilted, there was no chemistry between the characters and the acting, apart from Robert Duvall and Werner Herzon was woeful. A real stinker. The screenplay was also a joke.

I have a question about the Reacher series.

Why does the FBI keep forgetting who he is?

1st book. He foils arguably the biggest money counterfeiting operation in US history. His brother the legendary top treasury genius agent Joe Reacher dies. An FBI agent dies, a whole town gets st canned. He leaves before the authorities arrive en masse, but the first cpl of questions from them will establish "Jack Reacher did all this."

2nd book. He stops a potential US civil war and seccession. He saves the daughter of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The God daughter of the President. The head of the Chicago Field Office knows him, a legendardy field agent who stepped down from being a Deputy Director of the FBI. The Director of the FBI knows him, having helped run part of the operation. General Garber helps him out, he is still active.

3rd book. He takes down the biggest lender of last resort in New York. He cleans up the killer of 2 New York cops and is told he will never have another police problem in NY again. The director of the US Army Personal records knows him and helps him out. The legendary top forensic athropologist in the US Army helps him out.

So, by book 4 he is known to the President, the Joint Chiefs and the Director of the FBI.
So why the hell has the rest of the FBI never heard of him, including a Deputy Director based in NY who a few months earlier would sure as hell heard about a brutal take down in the Twin Towers, a scandel involving high finance, an army cover up, cop killing and a bloke with a hook for a hand? All involving a bloke called Jack Reacher? Why when Reacher goes down to Quantico as a semi prisoner or when they arrest him in New York is his first phone call not to say...excuse me chaps, mind if I call your boss, the Director? I kind of know him? Or he keeps passing through a Marine base on the way into Quantico and as we all know Reacher won the Wimbledon. We also know every half retired Marine who can shoot says "well about 10 yrs ago I remembers this damn army guy who thought he could shoot, you still remain the only non-marine to have won the Wimbledon and the Corps has never forgotten it" so why doesnt he just pop out to the Marine base and say "hello chaps, Jack Reacher here, giz a hand with the Feds will you" ?

Its bugging me.

DJRC - did you read them all close together by any chance? that irritated me too along with a host of other inconsistencies im sure i wouldn't spot if i hadn't just read the first ten back to back - a major one of which being his physical size would have been quite a drawback in numerous of the circumstances.....(actually one reason I have no issue at all with cruise playing the role!)

Not having read the books, I thought the film was pretty entertaining, not ground-breaking, but certainly worth a visit to see.

Which book is the film based on? Killing floor?
"One Shot", which is the first one I read. Lee Child actually has a cameo role in the film; he's the desk sergeant in the police station.

I've read them all now apart from the most recent one. I think they're real page turners, but then I'd say the same about Tom Clancy and Frederick Forsythe.

Reacher is an interesting character. Big, but smart with it and (refreshingly) not afraid to terminate a villain if they deserve it. The head butting thing comes from Lee Child himself, so I suggest no one criticises his books to his face.banghead

Who? Me?

I quite like the writing style and the plots, whilst a little formulaic, are always well thought out.

Thrillers with murder or revenge suit my train journeys! smile
