Trying to remember who the character in fiction was that you could hear him coming by the sound of his leg.
Captain Ahab had a wooden leg but I think the main "sound" in that book was the clock. Or was that Peter Pan?
In Treasure Island, LJ Siler has a wooden leg but I cannot find reference to the tapping sound.

Thanks

Are you perhaps thinking of Blind Pew from Treasure Island? He didnt have a wooden leg but being blind found his way by tapping a walking cane/stick.
Blind Pew is the pirate who delivers the Black Spot to Billy Bones at the Admiral Benbow Inn.
As a young child, i watched a BBC serialisation of Treasure Island (1957?) and was frightened by Blind Pew.

Or Bush in the Hornblower novels? After he lost his foot of course. There is a scene in The Commodore when Hornblower is annoyed by a regular tapping noise that turns out to be Bush’s wooden leg on the deck.
