Does anyone live in Notts? I need to find somewhere to live ASAP and some property in Nottingham seems fairly priced (in todays market anyway). Ideally want to live on the outskirts or villages surrounding it, if I can see a field/grassy area I'm happy . Several mates have advised against it due crime figures but surely they've come down in recent years since the cleanup?

TBH all I need is a fair sized 2 bedroom pad in a decent area where the car/s aren't going to get stolen or broken into and preferably a suitable industrial estate or similar (farm with a spare barn?) within 10 - 15 miles for workshop space. Budget ideally 100K - 150K for a house or 200K if its got 20ft X 20ft workshop space with car access.

All opinions gratefully received

Well, it is (I think) about the fourth most dangerous place to live for crime ...

... but the rumours still persist that there are five women for every bloke.

Well at least there were in the Black Orchid all those years ago

But I suppose the property is pretty cheap, but then the crime is probably your reason.

Hucknall and Beeston - stay away.

Well I lived in Hucknall for my 1st 30 years, and for 4 of them I parked a TVR on my drive and no one even touched it, and my old mans Alpina B3 parked next to it wasn't touched either
All towns have good and bad areas though
I moved a few miles further north (Sutton-In-Ashfield) near Mansfield and I like it, the house prices are a little cheaper (a year ago we paid £120k for a 3 bed with garage, newish build, detached) and with in a mile radius we've got parks, boating lakes, countryside or busy town centre

Look on www.thisisnottingham.co.uk for houses. The gun crime is mostly drug related and fairly localised. I live about a mile (as the sparrow hops) from one of the worst areas (St Anns), and never had a problem (so far).

I think you'll be lucky to find that sort of spec for that sort of money, but good luck.

It's quite a good place to live apart from the low life scum who in the main live in the inner city areas.
You will find property gets cheaper as you move away from the city, quite good places are Beeston and Long Eaton especially if you like countryside that can't be developed on. Or you could go west into the vale of belvoir butit will be expensive. I'd stay clear of Bulwell and some of Hucknall but those areas are cheaper probably because you are moving north into mining towns. It's down to your budget. If you have the money there will be lots of places to choose from.

I was glad to leave nottingham and move to Long Eaton.

And this kind of manhunt is quite rare
And another major plus point of the Nottingham/Mansfield area is Donington is only 30 minutes away

West Bridgford is VERY nice.... also VERY expensive!

Personally I wouldn't like to live in any part of Nottingham or the city suburbs.... I work with a whole office from around Nottingham, and nearly every one has experienced street crime or burglary at first hand.

I'll stick to Derby!

I believe that a friend is putting his flat up for rent in Wollaton, (Where I live very nice, peaceful almost no crime) the flats have 2 sets of woods which if you open the window you would fall into them, wollaton park is less then 2 mins walk and you have 2 pubs also in 2-3mins walk, I think his flat is a 3 bedroom, not sure on rent price. But it would be fine as a stop gap while you find the pad your after. I also think there is one up for sale but im afraid its a 99 year lease. Wollaton is a great place to live in notts, especially is your near wollaton road, mr manns, wheelhouse or the willoughby, or the main entrance to wollaton park.

Sutton in Ashfield, tis a local place for local people, there's nothing for you here. The best thing about anywhere around Ashfield is the road out!

Some very nice villages around Lambley (just outside Mapperley area). Lambley has got 4? pubs and the one I went in (can't remember its name) had great selection of real ale. Probably out of price range though.

Oh yes, and what was the outcome of your "I'm leaving Leicester" thread exactly?

A lot of people live in Derby where property is a fair bit cheaper then make the dash down the A52 (30mins) to Nottingham to work.

Allestree/Chellaston are decent enough areas.

There's usually cheap lock ups in Long Eaton and Sandiacre area.

For suburbs in Nottingham with countryside not too far away you could try West Bridgeford, Wollaton, Wilford.

They need new bloodstock up there to widen the gene pool a bit
The thing I like about the northern towns as apposed to the Nottingham inner boundery towns is the gap between them, all the nice areas of Notts back on to a nasty area which leads to the scrotes going 'shopping' next door

I live in Chilwell (couldn't afford to buy in beeston) which is ok-ish. Would agree with what most people are saying, avoid St-Annes (sp?), the Meadows etc, go for Wollaton or West Bridgeford if you can afford it. Long Eaton is ok if you dont mind being a bit of a trek from the city (£20 taxi on saturday night). Beeston is ok but the prices are pushed up by the uni/Boots so if you arent connected to one or the other dont bother.

Dont get overly stressed about the crime, most of it is drug related in the nastier areas, plus the usual city centre drunks. My car insurance risk is lower in Chilwell than it was when I went to uni in Bath which is hardly a crime ridden slum.

Be careful with the surrounding villages, most of them are dirt cheap for a reason.
