Nottingham is a lively, up and coming city. I would say that Derby is a bit depressing and is not so exciting when it comes to night life or culture.

Derby isn't depressing at all - it's a small city so doesn't have some of the "features" of Notts - guns, smack heads, etc, etc are not really a problem here (in Derby if you hadn't guessed! ).

I live in Chellaston (well, Shelton Lock) - small world innit.

And Derby has some proper history - if you ever get chance go on one of Richard Felix's ghost walks. As well as being interesting he slags Notts off at every oppportunity.... which is nice.

I was wondering when I would get some good old stick for what I said. I apologise sincerely. I have never lived in Derby so I am hardly in a position to comment. I always enjoy visiting the town and love Derbyshire people. I worked in Ilkeston for 8 years and met more honest and friendly people there than ever I did in Nottingahm in 16 years.

There's guns and bad guys in Derby as well as over here, maybe just not so many of them! I don't know Derby city centre very well but I found the council areas very depressing and run down, moreso then the places I've seen in Nottingham. There is some lovely countryside around Derby but I don't like the town. I'm at Long Eaton and find that a pretty good place to live. There are scum bags here as well but not so many as in larger towns. Lots of countryside around me which can't be developed because it's a flood plane. Also to be had are large victorian houses with commercial applications and a fair bit cheaper then Nottingham prices.

Friend lives in the new estate in West Bridgeford and is very happy there.

Only problem is that there are no trees to speak of (they cut them down to build the estate), so no birds in the morning twittering away.

Very true, and at least you can walk around Derby at night without having to look over your shoulder constantly.

Derby is a much friendlier and less threatening place than Nottingham IMHO.

It's nice to have some wildlife around you and I couldn't live without a few trees and birds etc. Thing is, there's people out there who can't think further then the nearest McD!

There are some bad guys in Derby but very few - I associated with a few bad lads in the (not so) dim and distant. Guns and knives just aren't part of the scene here - there isn't enough drugs, gangs, etc to warrant it.

There are some depressing areas - Normanton and parts of Chaddesden but they are extremely small compared to the massive areas of deprevation in Notts.

Derby City Centre is crap but as you say, there are plenty of nice suburbs and countryside.

I'm not saying Derby is perfect and a place of total serenity and peace but I'd say it was a safer place than Notts for someone moving into the area.

Long Eaton is a nothing place - it's just a little town with almost no redeming features

Emma - no offence taken

I can hardly remember agreeing with someone more!!

Although there are far nicer restaurants in Nottingham, why can't someone open a really nice one in Derby please.

I second that. I wouldn't like to live in Long Eaton - too quiet for me, so no offence taken.

Partly true, but it's never been really industrial so seems more of a market town. Long Eaton never impressed me either but now that I'm here it's grown on me quite a lot. It's just an extension of Beeston an Attenborough these days and demand is soaring. I like the fact that it's stayed a small town and it's central between Derby and Nottingham so you get easy access to both towns plus the M1 motorway and EMA airport are on the doorstep There's loads of countryside, canals rivers etc within walking distance so it has more to offer then initally seen. Blink and you miss it all. It's not the best place to live but it's quite ok.

Glad about that chap as I'm off to look at a house there shortly.

Do you have any workshop space spare?

I have short term storage but not for to much stuff. If you pm me I'll show you where you may find the sort of place you're after I know a place round the corner where they have masses of space and may help you out. Oh, lots of small engineering firms on the doorstep

I left London 6 years ago and moved to Nottingham and I wouldn't live anywhere else in the country now.

The people are friendly and the city has excellent nightlife. I live in the City centre and can get out into the country in 5 mins flat and to Donnington and Mallory in less than 20mins. The airport is also very handy when I need some sun

What more could you want?

Thats what I love about this place.
I live in South Notts;
10 mins walk to about 10 pubs/bars
5 mins drive to some nice country lanes/pubs
25mins from Donny/Airport
10mins drive to the city centre

I do think Notts is getting a bad press for the level of crime. Yes, its bad, but no worse than every other major city in the UK.

Last time I read it'd just overtaken Liverpool and was now no. 2 in the country for violent crime.

That many pubs and you must be in either Gotham or Rudd.

Yes it is in Arboretum, Mapperley Park/St Annes border. Me and some friends ordered a Chinese earlier this year and when the guy came to deliver it (St Anne's) a prostitute tried to get into his car as soon as he opened the door!
