I do think Notts is getting a bad press for the level of crime. Yes, its bad, but no worse than every other major city in the UK.

Last time I read it'd just overtaken Liverpool and was now no. 2 in the country for violent crime.

Afraid so. We often have the police helicopters circling overhead sunny Sneinton. Nice

That's when they're not over sunny Long Eaton!! Twockers drive everywhere. At least we have a chopper up in the sky.

I have so many facilities on my doorstep I don't need the car to fetch anything. I rarely buy anything in Nttm, it's mostly available here. I can walk to all the main stores, it's all on the doorstep yet I can also walk to the countryside in 10 mins. Sneinton's a busy place, lots going on.

Not all of it good... Wife worked in a bakery in Sneinton on found it a place of extremes - very friendly, or a bit dangerous.

I think the reputation of Long Eaton is improving?

Friend is a teacher in Derby, and wouldn't live there, and found she prefers Long Eaton to Derby and Nottingham.

jjr1: if you can get to Mallory from Nottingham in 20minutes, you are a better man than I...

Also Nottingham is less than 45 minutes to Curborough, and 30 minutes to Darley if you are into 'bikes. There is even some grasstracking just North of Oxton if that's your thing.

Cheers, Phil

There are some bad guys in Derby but very few - I associated with a few bad lads in the (not so) dim and distant. Guns and knives just aren't part of the scene here - there isn't enough drugs, gangs, etc to warrant it.

There are some depressing areas - Normanton and parts of Chaddesden but they are extremely small compared to the massive areas of deprevation in Notts.

Derby City Centre is crap but as you say, there are plenty of nice suburbs and countryside.

I'm not saying Derby is perfect and a place of total serenity and peace but I'd say it was a safer place than Notts for someone moving into the area.

Long Eaton is a nothing place - it's just a little town with almost no redeming features

Emma - no offence taken

I can hardly remember agreeing with someone more!!

Although there are far nicer restaurants in Nottingham, why can't someone open a really nice one in Derby please.

There are a couple of decent places in Derby: Zest (city centre) or Darleys (Darley Abbey) for more modern European cuisine; Siam Corner (Thai), Jee Jah Jee's (very popular Indian, although a couple of miles outside of the centre its well worth it). Also there's a little place called "Vertigo" that's attached to Derby Dance School. Not many tables and a limited menu but the food has always been good when we've been. There's several Italian places but none that I would highly recommend. They're all a bit "garlic bread and bolognaise" for me. Pepito's Mexican is pretty good too.

There are many in the outlying villages, too many to list.

Damn, I'm hungry now.....

Tried them all!!!

Zest - great food, owned by a very nice chap, can lack a bit of atmos.
Darleys - Used to go about once a week, gone downhill since it was sold to new owners about 18 months ago IMHO.
Siam - Nice, also like Chai Yo for Thai. Not your fancy night out though.
Jee Jah Jee's - For indian I tend to prefer The Viceroy in Duffield.
Vertigo - Food OK, zero atmos and you tend to be on your own, well we were!

To add to your list.....

Tonic - used to be cracking food, won young chef of the year a while back, a bit pack 'em in now.
Haus - probably the best of the bunch.

My point was that Derby could do with somewhere like Harts or World Service in Nottingham.

Maybe it's just to small to support top end restaurants.

Cool, that's a bit creepy. We must have crossed paths at some point

I was going to put Tonic but I think it's gone downhill in the last year. I've only ever had a sandwich at Haus, and while it was a good sandwich I didn't want to recommend it on the strength of just that.

Would agree with all of your comments, I think Darley's has picked up again though. It did get a bit flaky after the change of hands but I would still say its the best food in Derby by miles.

Viceroy - only ever had a take-away just after it opened. Know someone who goes regularly and they swear by it. I live on the south-west side of Derby though so JJJs is more convenient.

There was also Mediteranean Blue (now Harbour City chinese?) which didn't last long but I remember the food being spot on. Same people have (had) a pub on the hill just up from the lights in Donnington which was also really nice. Further afield - The Bay Tree in Melbourne is a cracker for Sunday lunch but it attracts a few too many coffin-dodgers.

Mmmmmmmm World Service, top choice sir. Not tried Harts.

I know we're wildly off topic...but it's interesting all the same!

The place in Donnington is the Nags Head - Great food, tried it a couple of weeks ago. They're moving to somewhere else at Christmas.

Totaly agree on The Bay Tree.

I also like The White Heart in Duffield, really good atmos and good food.

Glad you like World Service, It's owned by a member of the family so it's always nice to hear good things about it.

Love that place.... Sunday "early" lunchtimes (12-1.30ish) wander in, drink coffee and eat fab food, and chill out on big comfy leather sofas......

There is a Turkish place in the Cornmarket - for the life of me I can't remember what it is called - but it used to be an Italian?

Have had an "evening" meal in there, and also lunch.

Totally faultless on both occasions, great food, and wonderful service.

I just get the feeling it won't be there that long....

Funnily enough, I was going to recommend Browns in Nottingham for a similar Sunday morning vibe. They do the most awesome breakfast, though the music can be a bit loud for nursing a hang-over. Never eaten there otherwise but I've heard its ok. Bluu is not bad either (Nottingham), also good for more chilled out drinking and music.

The Kam Hon (just around the corner from Tonic) used to be top class. It's still not bad but not as good as it used to be.

Darleys is a bit poncy for me.

There's a Frankie and Bennys (sp) now just outside of town but it's pretty average (I'm not suggesting it's a good restaurant, just that it's there!).

The best Indian (imo) was the Raj Poot in Normanton but I think it's closed down now.

I don't like JJJ at all.

All this talk is making me hungry so I'm gonna have me a Cantonese takeaway tonight - the China Garden in Chellaston if you're interested - excellent crispy beef cantonese style.

I'm amazed that there are so many people on here from Derby!

I've lived in Nottingham for 6 months now and really like the place. I've not seen ANY trouble what so ever, not even a fight. I go out a lot in the city centre and its a great night out, loads of new places to go to all the time.

I live near Mapperley and find it to be a very pleasant place where everyone seems friendly. I share a house with 4 people and we're all new to Notts and we all really like the place. (Mainly becasue the night life is so good )

I'm now in the process of looking for somewhere to buy.
