A TR6 is so much more a modern car compared to the 4. The 6 is way more flexible over the 4. A slight wrong choice of shift makes the engine stutter and hesitate . . . great sounding mill though.

Is the PI system really that good? If so, why did it develop a poor reputation for going out of tune?

It's a twin shuttle system that does need maintenance every once in a while. The main problem however was the fuel pump itself. Tucked away in the boot, it was never cooled properly and as a result could fail through excess heat. The best thing to do is on hot days open the boot after a hot run and allow air to circulate in the boot. My father who owns a TR5 used to tie forks and sucklike to the pump to dissipate the heat!

It's actually a good system let doewn by slightly poor implementation in the car itself.

There are/were kits available which "fuel-cool" the pump, wrapping it in a coil of copper tubing through which fuel circulates to help dissipate the heat.
