That is one fine looking motorcar (and I'm no fan of that particular era of British Sports cars), and a great write up Dinkel, has killed some time this afternoon.

I've hardly bumped into hardtops . . . Did they come with the standard 6 or were they optional? Ragtop up isn't all that so I can imagine a wintertime HT is all the comfort you need.

Been outside in a TR4 last saturday. Excellent! Check out the red one here.

A TR6 is so much more a modern car compared to the 4. The 6 is way more flexible over the 4. A slight wrong choice of shift makes the engine stutter and hesitate . . . great sounding mill though.

Lucas PI (Petrol Injection)
An electric fuelpump leads the high-pressure gas to a distributor: one in and six out. A spinning rotor needly adjusts the amount of mixture for combustion per cilinder. A simple and mechanical device that, once set up, works like a Swiss watch.
To get the same performance with carbs the engine will need a few hours on the rolling road. But still, response will never be that direct. Webers (and all carbs for that matter) have to average, usually over-fueling slightly and running slightly retarded as the fuel/ignition systems are mechanical and need time to respond to your right foot.

Nice article - and great pics.
Is the PI system really that good? If so, why did it develop a poor reputation for going out of tune?

It's a twin shuttle system that does need maintenance every once in a while. The main problem however was the fuel pump itself. Tucked away in the boot, it was never cooled properly and as a result could fail through excess heat. The best thing to do is on hot days open the boot after a hot run and allow air to circulate in the boot. My father who owns a TR5 used to tie forks and sucklike to the pump to dissipate the heat!

It's actually a good system let doewn by slightly poor implementation in the car itself.

There are/were kits available which "fuel-cool" the pump, wrapping it in a coil of copper tubing through which fuel circulates to help dissipate the heat.

I am odd that I want to sell my S2000 to buy one of these? Any indication if they can be used as a daily car?
