Ackshewally, the reason Ultima didn't turn up for the Sunday Times 'shambles', was because Ultima wanted to test 0-150. All the other manufacturers boycotted it (who knows, they might not even be able to get to 150mph
) so Ultima left them to it. For the record, a Noble M12 does 0-150 in 23 seconds.
An Ultima, well, you could almost stop for a cuppa and still beat it as it goes 0-150 in 11.8!
The are fast cars, there are 'supercars' and then there are Ultima's

I guess by the time you hear it's coming it's already passed you before you get a chance to look at it. Verdict: Perfect if garaged.

I have no affinity to Ultima, but Richard deserves credit for setting the record, he must have had to do a few runs to get that right!
The mainstream supercar manufacturers will never be able to match the flexibility that the low volume supercar manufacturers have. That's the beauty of the Ultima - They are built on a highly tune-able engine platform that is the main stay of American tuners and has been for thirty years. This ability gives them reliability from a time proven platform and always allows them to stay at the top of the leader board by generating a new model (here it is the 720) to take the record. Also you have to respect the fact that the engine is normally aspirated when being compared to the over-engineered Veyron. If and when Ultima decides to go down the forced induction route, they can have power levels up to 1500bhp.
Ultima has a unique niche market. Not only can you specify your requirements for them to build your supercar to a very high standard, but you also have the added luxury that you can assemble it yourself. The Ultima is not a 'kit car', it is a self assembled supercar and it comes with all the new parts necessary to build one literally out of the box, thus not requiring a donor car of any form. You have to ask the question: If the Carrera GT and Veyron were available as a self assembly box of all new parts as the Ultima is; would their image be any different from what they are as the sum of an assembled car by the manufacturer? The Ultima deserves every bit of credit that it gets. Its exorbitantly inexpensive compared to others, it does what it says on the tin and above all else its a fun car to drive.
Having previously owned one it is the type of car that makes you appreciate exactly what the car is about. They are outrageously addictive to drive, extremely cheap to maintain (£50 for an oil service and no ridiculous cam belt service charges either), and have the added benefit that most people have no conception as to what they are which removes all badge snobbery. Some people criticise the styling, but it mostly is that shape for an engineering reason. Given a choice now between a new Carrera GT and an Ultima GTR720 as a straight choice car for car, I would take the Ultima any day.

err..surely that means it comes in the form of a kit of bits n'est pa? Self assembled is just some fancy marketing pap for kit car :-) Bit like a window cleaner being a vision technician..;-)
