Not a top-speed as such, but one of my friends used to own a J-reg Vauxhall Astra 1.4 8v. Dunno what the deal was but it was stupidly quick for what it was. I had an Almera GTi at the time and really there wasn't anything in it between the two. We even used to swap cars to make sure it wasn't a driver issue and it wasn't. That car could do 0-60 in about the same time as my Almera and could also get the speedo 'off the clock' (130mph IIRC).

former hire car?

I claim the Fiat Panda Land Speed Record (so far)... Managed 102 mph indicated on a very long downhill M-Way section in a Panda 900 hire car. I would've been utterly stuffed if I'd have had to stop within 2 miles and the engine, sans revlimiter, was probably never the same again.

I got 98 out of a Fiat Panda 900cc on the A19 in North Yorkshire

that was scary

80-85mph out of a 750cc fiat panda

80mph out of a 1969 Fiat 500, with tuned engine from a Fiat 126 that included a head from a Panda 30. More to come as well, but my bottle ran out!!

Dunno, but it was mental. It had a ford interior (we eventually realised) and retrofit 'leccy windows. My friend was 18 at the time and thought his £2k purchase was great, especially as his insurance was cheap.

80mph (est) in a 2cv. Came up the hill (dual-c) slipstreaming a lorry, whipped out in to the overtaking lane shortly after the crest with a huge tailwind. 5 seconds later and it blew a spark plug clean out of the head at 80mph. Scared the crap out of us.

1955 morris minor series 2, 803cc. Haldon Hill 1997, screamed the shit out of it in 4th and knocked it out of gear. Got the speedo needle right round against the stop.

Had 110 in a fiat 126, similar story.

Mini 998 City E, got that speedo around to the stop again (115 ish)big hill, about 8500 rpm! Sounded like it was going to explode.

100 in a (modded engine) Suzuki SJ410 with mud tyres.

Had mothers 1.1 saxo at rev limiter rpm in 5th gear on a downhill bit of the A303, not sure what that was but was well over 110.

Of course, there weren't any children playing on the road at the time......

bow bow

Well done that man, Haldon Hill has been the venue for many a land speed record attempt by people I know.

Tackling it in a morris minor series 2? You must be mucking fental nuts I assume the speed camera wasn't at the bottom back then?!

110 out of a 1.1 Saxo? Bugger must try harder, the 106 has topped at 105 indicated so far actually coming down Haldon Hill, I'm home soon I'll think about having another go then

I salute you!

A big enough hill and a strong enough tailwind, and you're in with a shout

90mph, on the flat, in the Traveller, with a passenger. 1098cc engine, only thing that might have helped get it up to that speed is the triple branch exhaust manifold, but not being technical I don't know why that would have helped, just something I later got told about.

Fit Panda, what a car.

My mates Mum had one and when she took us to the pub (we were not small) it used to lean if we sat on the same side.

about 90ish in my 850cc battered old, ex royal mail mini van.
i used to travel between east anglia and south wales quite a bit, i used to plonk it on the motorway, foot flat to the floor, and only stop for petrol!
it would manage to cruise about 75-80, but come to any kind of hill and it would go back down to 60ish, but on the other side of the hill it would rev until you got valve bounce, and the needle would be in the petrol gauge!

i remember being very impressed when i was a kid, by my dad getting his citroen dyane up to 70 mph on the M4 once, 4 up with bags!

Managed to get the needle rising for the second lap of the speedo (maybe 115-120ish?) on my old Mini with an Austin 1300 engine transplant... on a big downhill stretch of (PRIVATE) motorway near Carlisle.

Got a look of disbelief from the driver of an XK8 as we shot past with the front grille missing and the oil cooler hanging out the front.. (engine mounts were fcensoreded, so the oil cooler needed to be moved out of the way of the dizzy otherwise it dislodged the dizzy cap every time you lifted off the gas).
