Colin was such an inspiration to so many of us for many years, it is hard to put into words just how much he was loved by so many of us.
His abundant natural talent behind the wheel and his determination to win, not just compete, was obvious to anyone fortunate to witness him in action.
I feel honoured to have watched Colin complete in many rallies throughout his career - from the early events in Scotland, to a WRC event in Perth Australia, and most recently on the WRC event in Catalunya a few years ago.
The world has lost one of it's True legends, and is today a much sadder and lonlier place.
You will never be forgotten.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends you leave behind.
Rest In Peace Colin
John

Diana anyone?
Well I ignored all of the Diana stuff actually -- I think I went out the day of the televised funeral, for example. I'm just saying how odd it is that people feel this way. Towie said:
Thats basically my point. None of us were really "fans" of Diana in the way that some of those women were obsessed by her and therefore we did not really understand the mass hysteria associated with our funeral.
Now we have what could loosely be described as "one of our own" gone in tragic circumstances we see things a little differently because we feel that we "Knew" him. Even if it was only from listening to him on a video game.
Slowly but surely I`m being proved rightNow we have what could loosely be described as "one of our own" gone in tragic circumstances we see things a little differently because we feel that we "Knew" him. Even if it was only from listening to him on a video game.
Totally gutted. An absolute hero of mine, and now lost.Watched him at LM and was floored by his commitment going into corners, Drove more like he was on a sprint, not a 24 hour race, but thats I guess what he did.
Is it just me or was there little coverage of this on the TV - I mean compare this with what you get when some overpaid "chap" bruises his mata tassel ...........

As one who sat on the periphery of rallying, by never really making that much effort to watch it but always knowing it was there, playing the odd rally computer game driving a Subaru from time to time, trying to fill Colin's racing shoe's!
Colin's name was the only one I knew of, cared about or had any interest in. A superb driver with an even more superb career track record to back it all up.
Calm, resolute, unassuming but lethal behind the wheel he never failed to inspire whenever I saw of clip of him on TV.
Watching him driving at Le Mans in 2004, my Father and I couldn't help but cheer him on.
He was a truly inspirational character and was to rallying what Senna was to F1. I was gutted then and I'm gutted now. An total, absolute tragedy.
My thoughts are with the family and friend's he's left behind.

Sorry if this has already mentioned, but this is a high volume thread and I'm having trouble keeping up, but I am very suprised that the front page of PH makes no mention of Colin McRae's tragic death at all.
see here jon http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Deeply saddened at this terrible news. Although not a big follower of rallying, since the passing of the Grp B cars, I was aware of Colin's prodigious driving talent & sporting achievements. He had a tremendous competitive spirit & determination to win. He always appeared to be a gentleman and a thoroughly decent chap when interviewed.
This accident is terrible, and somehow cruelly ironic- that a man who drove at tremendous speed through heavily forested rallies should meet his end in a routine helicopter flight?? First Richard Burns, now in a cruel twist of fate, Colin has gone too.... In a word it's SHIT!
Condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. RIP.

see here jon http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Only just heard the tragic news this morning. 10 hours later, still can't quite believe it.
Fed up of hearing the word 'Legend' used in the wrong context, however in this case, there isn't really a more appropriate word to describe him. Loved the clip of the 6R4 missing his turn, and the subdued laughter by him & co-pilot.
It's clear we're all experiencing a feeling of great loss (even those such as myself, who was never a big rally fan, but still recognised him for the talent he was) - it's very rare to have a Scottish world champion (at anything!), however our feelings must pale in comparison to those of his family and close friends - I can't imagine what his wife and daughter are going through right now.
You will be remembered for ever - RIP.

What a tragic event for motorsport, and the McRae family.
Watched Colin race all sorts of cars, rally, GT, Le Mans, Paris Dakar. Fantastic talent and a guy that seemed to enjoy his racing. We need characters, we need talent, we will miss him.
Such a shame that two of the great names of recent UK ralling are now lost to us. Hope Colin and Richard have some good racing whever they are now!!.
A true piston head.
