It's what you might expect from those people.

TBH though, if Mary Williams had just passed away, one could imagine similar comments being posted on PH (I hope no one on PH takes offense at that suggestion either, but I can just picture it now, the swear filter working on overtime, and threads of rejoicement being locked all over the place).
Although in principle the sentiments might be there, it would still be downright disrepectful at such a sad time for said persons family. And I as a mod would not accept such 'joyus' sentiment to be expressed as such on PH.

Should the persons family be villified and cursed for an individuals opinion? I don't think so.

yes It's called decency and respect.
Absolutely - something distinctly and sickeningly lacking on that Google thread.

To me a lot of those comments seem not only disrespectful, but hypocritical

As we are all aware Paul Smith's stance on speed cameras wasn't one of, we hate speed cameras so ban them, rather that a better approach should be considered to road safety and that we should question the information and evidence provided by the government on their approach this.

From personal experience and I would expect the majority of people on this forum have experienced similar situations. I have seen many cyclists have complete disregard for road rules, completely ignoring road signs, traffic lights, not having lights on their bike when it is dark, complete lack of awareness of what is going on around them, causing many dangerous situations for other road users.

Now IMHO those comments appear to be targeting someone who is pro motor vehicles when their personal philosophy is that all such vehicles are bad and must be banned or something along those lines.

Why this is I do not know, but it sounds to me like they are angry due to some other issue in their lives, leave them to be blind, naive, hypocritical and angry.

Have another read of what you've just posted, then take a good hard look at yourself.

OK, so we know you didn't really mean that people that post addresses onto the net should be shot, but in the context of this thread really not a terribly well thought out turn of phrase, maybe.

I think the post quoting his name and address to use as the 'nominated driver' for speeding tickets is a great idea.

I'm sure he'd be happy to be charged with speeding / helping out other motorists, after his death.

Certainly when I die, if I can stick up two fingers to the system thats fine with me.

Do you know what, I reckon Paul Smith would appreciate the irony of one of us saying that he was driving if we got a NIP over the last couple of weeks.

Shameful actions by a group of pathetic people, the same group of people who are happily spoon-fed inaccurate government statistics on the effectiveness of speed cameras, and other such things as climate change. In any other part of history such people would not have been provided a platform to air such rubbish, that's if evolution even allowed such types to reach pubity - they are the same moaners from organisations like 'BRAKE' who call for a 20mph national speed limit because their mongrel child is too stupid to not run into the road. I find their assumption that Paul was supporting 'boy racers' a joke, the people actually most likely to be caught on camera are the middle-aged, middle-classes who have years of experience driving and use their car for a living - the same group less likely to have an accident (on a per mile basis).

Paul certainly annoyed a few people in his quest to challenge the assumption that speed cameras were the 'be and end all' solution to road safety (I think the request to stop supplying SafeSpeed with government information by a senior police officer showed how successful he really was). His work will be greatly missed in a society where commonsense plays second fiddle to the protection of the lowest common denominator.

RIP Paul.

I believe some people on here should appreciate that BRAKE isn't all about speed. They even (shock horror) promote many of the things discussed many times on here and by Paul.

e.g.

Where are our traffic police?
A graduated licence for novice drivers and regular re-tesintg for existing licence holders.
Tougher punishment for killer "joy riders" and drunk drivers.

The following is pasted off their page aimed at motorcyclists, these are links to more information.

· THE FACTS: about bikers and the risks you face
· Train up – BE A BETTER RIDER
· Gear up – SAVE YOUR SKIN
· Slow up – GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO REACT
· Look up – STAY ALERT TO HAZARDS
· Team up – LOOK OUT FOR YOUR MATES
· Check up – KEEP YOUR BIKE IN GOOD NICK
· Wise up – KNOW THE DANGERS OF BAD WEATHER RIDING
· The Pledge to Ride Safely – 15 SAFE RIDING RULES
· CASE STUDIES: fatal and serious motorcycle crashes

It's not all about speed, it is actually quite balanced. There are similar bullet points aimed at fleet drivers.

I believe PH's should regard BRAKE as more good than bad and not align them with The Enemy like that moronic cyclist and some crazy environmentalists. BRAKE recognises that the car is here to stay.

Their view on the value of speed cameras is of course wrong, as history will show, but give them merit for their other initiatives. They are only trying to save lives on several fronts.

I'm not associated with them in any way but have had a minor professional involvement with Mary Williams some years ago. I may write to her one day soon suggesting one or two things.

Ref. my post prior to TMH, please don't flame me without taking a browse around their website, try not to get hot under the collar on the speed issues and look at the bigger picture.

I am now going out for a pint.

And there lies the problem - have a read through their site too, the level of anger aimed, incorrectly I might add, at the motorist because someone they know has made a mistake and been killed is criminal. If BRAKE promoted road safety through common-sense without any bias or inaccuracy they would have my full support.

I would not give them the credibility born of giving a toss about what they say. Paul dealt with this minor intrusion everyday, and he brushed it off as the nonsensical rubbish that it is, and concentrated on what was important.

What many people forget is that Paul had a cause and purpose, and a noble one, he simply wanted to reduce the number of people that are injured and killed on our roads.

Whatever your stance on speed cameras, traffic police, the state of the roads, road safety policy etc etc you have to respect someone who is willing to give up their livelihood to fight an establishment as big and as ingrained as HMG and the DFT within for such a cause. I have no doubt that the stress of his actions ultimately took his life earlier than if he had stayed in his well paid IT engineer role (although to be fair the fags probably didn't help!).

Anyone who can come up with the sort of drivel that has been posted on that site, regardless of who it is about, is simply someone who does not have intellect, wit and understanding required to be a normal human being and as such we should pity them and look over their inadequacies, it seems that their posts are their strength and we know what it really means to win internet forum battle.

Me and Wildy Cat have never kept it secret that we are EX-BRAKE members and funded them originally.

We support still many of the things they advocate - such as NOT (ooops - edit) driving whilst on prescription drugs if they have a drowsy or other side effect. When it says "do not operate machinery" - this can include cars and you should always ask the pharmacist about side effects before the GP or medic prescribing anyway. wink

They had many successes - such as tackling rogue fleet and hjaulage operators along with disreputable garages.

We removed ourselves from membership - partly because we were concerned over the speed cam gullibility on the PR front and partly because we were also concerned over the "counselling apsect" which was not as objective as the one provided by properly trained NHS counsellors as it tended to be too inward looking with a blame to revenge culture setting in... and with little help - only the casting for life as the "evil one verging on a hate driven vengeance" given to care of the person who caused the incident - regardless of whether a silly human error or a fairly major one - both of which cause a guilt trauma just as severe for life - even if the person is punished by the courts over it.

You could say we saw the light on this when the person who drove into my wife's cousin and killed him tried to kill himself and when the widow of the man who almost killed Wildy attempted suicide after my wife returned her flowers. We had no idea how low she was feeling and she did not cause the accident anyway... yet we were very guilty if you like of "revenge fuelled by our affiliation to Brake" at the time.

So whilst we still applaud Brake's efforts in many aspects of their work - and which inter-twine with any common sense safety led campaign - there are these two aspects which just leave me and my wife just a bit cold as the speed cam issue seems to be a gullible swallowing or pandering to a party rule for funding support - and the other takes no comprehensive counselling or advice or even understanding for all parties involved in a tragedy on our roads. A "victim" may have been a contributing factor after all. rolleyes

I was taught by a recent Bikeability course - designed by the CTC - and which I took with my own children to teach them that no one "knows it all" perhaps... that a big nono NO NO was to undertake something larger than you - just in case they need the space to turn // or to put myself in a vulnerable position where I cannot be seen ( a view held by John Franklin who pops up in court cases involving cyclists. Funny how his word is "gospel" in such cases .. but never adhered to in relaity by these "non cyclists on cycling chat rooms" whistle )

But I am saying it does not matter how we choose to travel. The buck for our own safety is on our own person whistle

I've been following that thread for the last few days.

As a father of 2 boys, I cannot for the life of me understand the mentality of people who think that it is OK for cyclists to place themselves in potential danger and expect all other road users to not make a mistake, become distracted or any other activity that happens millions of times per day.

If either of my 2 decided they suddenly wanted to ride a bike in heavy traffic, I would do everythign in my power to ensure that they fully understood the dangers and I would equip them to the best of my ability with the best training available.

Paul used to bang on about Driver 1 making a mistake and Driver 2 not reacting in time to prevent a collision. Why would you abdicate your own safety to what another road user should do?

I am completely baffled as to why they think like this.

Remember to kiss your loved ones goodnight.

It's amazing how many times that Spindrift pops up on the internet.

The sad fact is that he has never had anything sensible or rational to say or discuss. As MM stated, he is exactly the type of person who has never had the chance to lead a 'normal' life. I suspect he's never been laid either, he has some serious pent up issues.

The biggest question, is how has he avoided jail all this time?

That's utterly disgusting and he is quoted in the wrong context regarding the use of deceased people's addresses to avoid fines.
