Ach .. potted history.Probably does a lot of cycling alone

Edited by Quinny on Sunday 16th December 23:28
Allegedly rides a yellow Trek on Critical Masses on last Friday in month in "londoninnit"
It posted a "photo" of itself on the bikeradar site when it first open shoppe in the summer. It claimed to be the "one looking like George Clooney in a group photo".
It looked like Clooney with a pointy chin und eyes too close together - but this was a poor photo und bear in mind his profile on this site where it claimed to be a widowed estate agent called Cathy Browne from Norwich complete with a photo of some woman another person claimed to have been pasted from some obscure web site now expired.
History of this idiot on C+ speak volumes.
spindrift .. claimed to live in "venezuela" - banned for same old same old.
reinvented as
Twomey... also banned for vulgar posting style
re-invented as "bimblyfimblywimbly" (from "the Gabon" .. gets around on that bicycle doesn't her?

Then after being banned for libelling my big sister .. he then turns up as "alexsnelling" from "Norfolk"... followed by "waveydaveygravy" from "londoninnit"... followed by "ben potter"... from "bath" - but moved to "londoninnit" when pointed out that "he must have broken the speed limit on the M4 to take part in the CM there" (politely pointed out by my cousin Willi on that occasion - posting as the "willibethecyclistmate"
... then we had "charlesnapier"... "snakesonaplane"... "Trekstar" ...."atomic" .."mitchum" und...a few others before re-emrging again as "spindrift" I think all this plus bannings from fora across the internet - including for cyclists ones speak volumes about what sane folk think of this odious little nonentity who gets his thrills from responses from the internet chatrooms only. He does not ride a bicycle. No evidence. Not one post on actual cycling issues or discussion of the latest Trek on the market which has mixed reviews in the cycling rags or best cycling routes around "londoninnit".. or how to load a pannier with essentials for a biking holiday .. or anything like that. He only on the "sopbox" spouting libellous und other spurious claims und can only back up by what he wrote on "wiki" und what "Mongiblets" wrote next in the Grauniad.
Yes.. a spiteful little weasel und if that photo on bikeradar ist "genuine" - he even look like one
. It was a group photo though.. it probably just as "genuine as his Cathy Browne one"
Ach? How I know all this. My big sister had a lot of bother with his bile - which resulted in the change to "bikeradar" headed by C+ former editor Tony Farelly who assured our family that the bikeradar site would be moderated properly too. I think he has a forum which attracts REAL cyclists.
The absence of fools ist noticeable.
I just read through the google thread and found it very upsetting.
I didn't know Paul, but used to read his input and work with interest and since becoming aware of safespeed and PH, I have tried to improve my driving accordingly. I would like to think that Paul would be happy knowing that his message reached at least one person (even though I know it has come through to many on here in PH land).
These people with their extreme and acid views SHOULD be ignored, but unfortunately they have a platform to speak on and there is always some idiot that will agree with them. To dergrade somebody after they have passed away, whether you agree with their views or not, is in my opinion sickening and just a reflection of the type of people they are.
I hope we can continue to educate and encourage people to learn vehicle control, observation and basic common sense. A cause that is well worth the investment of time and money. I just wish our dear government would see sense enough to follow such a route.

Good grief, the collective amnesia here...
Smith himself suggested sending speeding tickets to the addresses of people who have recently passed away. Smith supported the grossest intrusion into a grieving family imagineable:

You don`t even need to know the deceased. Just picking a name for the
local newspaper`s obituary column has been known to work nicely. With
a bit of care in your choice, there`s no one to call you a liar.

Smith himself allowed his forum to be used to post the addresses of people who wanted a clampdown on speeders:
www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15095&a... - 143k -
Smith himself made hilarious "jokey" references to a man killed driving a baker's truck as being "brown bread".
He also suggested the student killed by a speeding uninsured driver was driunk.
His forum, and this one, allowed posters to call police officers "Cxnts" and "nazis". Posters fantasised about killing cyclists and indulged in the vilest abuse of anyone who dared criticise them. What on earth are you so terrified of that you resort to playground insults against critics? Nobody is stopping you speeding if you want to , but don't throw tantrums and whine and snivel when your illegal activities are curtailed or criticised.
Smith had very little understanding of why cyclists despised him and his one note campaign. Smith admitted his lobby group was car-centric and he did his best to malign other road users to the extent of releasing hilariously misguided PRs (referring to himself in the third person!) that told blatant falsehoods about road safety.
Smiths also always used to try to impress gullible journalists by calling himself an "engineer." On a number of occasions I asked him at what university or centre of learning he studied engineering and what exams he had passed in the subject. Sadly he was always to busy to reply. Nor was he able to name the independent experts he claimed accredited his work. Funny that.
You'll delete this post and ban this poster no doubt, but finally, consider this..
The British Crime Survey asked respondants what their greatest annoyance was, what was the anti-social behaviour that had the largest negative impact on quality of life? The response?
Speeding.
http://www.reading.ac.uk/about/newsandevents/relea...
Speeding traffic was rated as a significantly greater problem than all other antisocial behaviours, with 43% of the population regarded speeding traffic as a 'very' or 'fairly big' problem in their area.
Furthermore, the perception of speeding traffic as the antisocial behaviour of most concern was held by both men and women - young, middle aged, and old.
End quote.
The honest views of residents giving their opinion of speeders.
Now, Smith had a chance to acknowledge this groundswell of public opinion.
Know what he did?
He claimed everyone who voiced an opinion was "brainwashed".
All over the country neighbourhoods are mobilising, picketing and lobbying for speed enforcement. Smith never, ever considered their views because the benchline he used to assess the impact of speeding was crashes. No other considerations. No thought for those bullied and intimidated by drivers screaming past their houses, no assessment of the noise impact of impatient boy racers, no consideration for vulnerable road users threatened by speeding drivers.
If Smith didn't live in sweaty transvestite land I'd have invited him on a ride. He could see for himself what happens out of sight of cameras when drivers choose how to drive with no respect for safety, other road users or the law.
He could experience for himself the reasons so many cyclists violently opposed his one-note campaign.
That he didn't live to see how staggeringly wrong he was is a tragedy, maybe he was tense from driving so much, maybe the ridicule he received on Youtubewas troubling, who knows. But then....
Smith moderated a forum where posters fantasisied about killing people, the wish was expressed to burn police officers to death, policemen were called cXunts and nazis. It was an unpleasant glimpse at the mindset of the kind of person who supported Smith's campaign. If the campaign dies with Smith then it's no great loss.

I have to say that mitchum9999 has a point. I read this thread and wonder what would be posted on here if it were not Paul, but Mary williams from brake that had died.
I have never been to the safespeed website, and agreed with much of what paul said on this forum, but if what mitchum9999 says about the safespeed website was true, I would have been appauled.
Death doesn't change the person you were, or what you stood for, but those that mourn his passing should be allowed to do just that, and those that don't should choose another thread to post on about speed issues.
I'd like to think that if some staunch anti-car campaigner died I would have the good grace not to comment on it unless I could find something decent to say.
There is no issue that I feel strongly enough about that I would insult someone who had died, no matter who it was. To do that takes an alarming lack of respect and perspective.
In my book an alarming lack of respect and perspective makes you an extreemist, no matter what side of the argument you're on.

Post my address on a forum where people express the desire to shoot me, give me a kicking and so on? If any of the stalky mentalists here wanted to find me they could do so quite easily, I suspect they are piss and wind though.
Really, the myopia and collective amnesia displayed is breathtaking. Being one of those who posted critically of Mr Smith (although stopping short of being abusive, I guess) - am I one of those 'obnoxious' ones ripe for a shooting? Amd why condemn behaviour among Smith's critics identical to what Smith himself did?
Like I said, Saddam's death repulsed me. I don't care what he did in terms of a justification for putting a rope round his neck. Is that what British soldiers are dying for? To obliquely endorse the actions we used as an excuse to invade Iraq? Count me out, that was a sickening, grubby little act of revenge. Chilling, I thought, the more so for our participation.
It's similar with Smith. Smith was the spokesman for the kind of drivers who say to the police "Haven't you got anyting better to do" and as such the death of his campaign is a good thing.
At best my feelings on his death are ambivelent (sp?) I don't care too much but I'd prefer it if he lived to see how misguided he was but since he was blind to criticism and deleted dissent from his grubby little forum i doubt anything would have punctured his self-importance.
If his partner shared his sentiments then logically she would be pleased to start getting speeding tickets addressed to him- she has said she will continue the campaign so it follows that she shares her late partner's disdain for the law and other peoples' safety.
And another near where I live yesterday- an 18 year old passenger killed in the Blackwall Tunnell. A safe speed in Smith's terms is a speed at which internal organs rupture upon rapid deceleration (hitting a lamppost in this case). A young man bled to death internally because the driver shared Smith's disregard for the speed limit. That's a tragedy right there.
Presumably we are not supposed to mention Smith's more odious quotes in orderto show respect. Sorry, I don't buy that, eulogies oughtn't be hagiographies.

- Spindrift has reappeared trolling out the same tired old lines (and lies).Get a grip - the country is firmly anti speed-camera, whatever the intentionally leading questionnaires might have you think. If someone asked me if speed cameras should be outside schools, I'd say 'yes' as well!
If you actually knew anyone in real life, and or dared speak to strangers face to face, you'd know the facts too.

If Mary Williams had died, I for one would have offered respect and condolences.I do think Brake have road safety and death/accident reduction at the heart of their intentions - I just think their suggested strategies and solutions regarding speed and cameras are at best misguided.
Could you find a MORI or similat poll that shows people DON'T want speed cameras please?
Could you please tell me where I've lied?
Do you see what I mean about insults- really, your case should be strong enough to make a strong case via argument rather than mud-slinging.
I suppose that there is a parallel with the death of Bernard Manning. My reaction when he died was to think 'good f'ckin riddance'. I'm not so sure that I could defend that attitude now. Although Manning had a distinct constituency that he appealed to, in much the same way as Smith did, that constituency and the attitudes that Smith and Manning espoused existed already and will continue to exist regardless of the earthly presence of the late departed. Smith's death won't change much and that alone means that doing the happy dance is just a pointless act of vindictive barbarism.
I'm thinking this through as it happens btw, so I may think differently tomorrow. But I doubt it.
Somebody asked if there was any essential difference between attitudes to his and Sadam's deaths. My view is simply this: it was quite likely that Smith wished no one harm but he was too stupid to see that his ideas would result in precisely that. Sadam's attitude to doing his opponents harm is one of historical record, hence my personal readiness to see his death and the sordid nature of it a matter for rejoicing i.e. what he did in his life forfeited any right to be treated as a human being.

"You're rumbled"
Blimey, you mean when I admitted who I am someone where may deduce the same thing? Cunning.
Use my email address and send pointless insults there rather than here, let's have less smoke or petty bile please.
Or don't you remember him making that joke about a dead bakery delivery driver, then steadfastly refusing to apologise for it.
What goes around comes around. Nobody has said much about Smith that they didn't say when he was alive.
My view now? Well, I'm with Smith and the acolytes. They wanted motorways opened much quicker after deaths than they are, so that drivers can get on with their lives. So, lets clear Smith out the way so we can get on with our lives.
Many apologies if that sounds insensitive.

The Scotch can take a joke, rather different from saying you would shoot someone or give them a kicking, mmm?
How's it going with your evidence that the general public oppose speed cameras please?
Do you share Smith's view that anyone who disagrees with him is "brainwashed"? Isn't that rather dismissive?

As a car enthusiast and a cyclist (well, a mountain biker) I don't see how the two can't sit together.
In fact, the kick you get from riding a downhill course is very similar to that of completing a rally stage or something in a car... you would think they are specifically linked pastimes. There is a large and active MTB forum here on Pistonheads and I can guarantee you won't find anyone with those sort of views there.
Yes you do get the occasional t
t in a car, but no more so than you get idiots on motor bikes, bicycles, horses or even their two own feet (when a pedestrian runs out).well the power of the web !!

Why not argue with the living, I'm here
.I could cause the same injury to the body with a baseball bat. Sudden resulting impact causing the delicate organs of the body to burst. splenic rupture causing the patient to bleed internally to the point where they died of massive internal haemorrage. A complete tragedy. But not at all relevant to the way they died.
To illustrate why don't we solve this problem by banning baseball bats moving over a certain speed. Anyone who hit a baseball more than say 30 yds was obviously moving their baseball bat at more than a safe speed, so lets fine them, villify them and finally lets talk about jail for repeat offenders. I think you must get the idea how daft you sound.
Or we could have a sensible conversation about how cyclists and cars should not be on the road together, and should be segregated in some way. Two tonnes of metal passing a cyclist at 20mph will kill you if anything goes wrong. Hell I could slowly run over a cyclist a 1mph and they'd still be dead. Campaign for safer cycling, and I'd support you, but there is no way to do it sharing the road with cars.

Selfish, arrogant and breathtakingly ignorant.
Cyclists make roads safer, segregation makes cycling more dangerous, you can Google cycle labnes if you don't believe me, or consider this:
Safety in numbers: more walkers and bicyclists, safer walking and bicycling
P L Jacobsen
Conclusion: A motorist is less likely to collide with a person walking and bicycling if more people walk or bicycle. Policies that increase the numbers of people walking and bicycling appear to be an effective route to improving the safety of people walking and bicycling.

More cycling is making UK roads safer
Oct 20th
CTC has welcomed news that an increase in cycling has made it safer to cycle on UK roads.
Basing its figures on Department for Transport statistics, CTC estimates that cycle use in the UK has increased by 10 per cent since 1993, and that the rate of reported pedal casualties has decreased by more than 34
per cent over the same period.
Roger Geffen, CTC campaigns and policy manager, said:
"The relationship between increased cycle use and reduced cycle casualties found in mainland Europe also holds for Britain - the more people that cycle, the safer it is to cycle."
http://www.bikebiz.co.uk/news/22045/More-cycling-i...
The more people cycle, the more aware drivers become and the safer the roads are for cyclists.

CYCLING MAKES ROADS SAFER!
Recent statistics gathered throughout the UK confirm that an increase in cycle use leads to safer roads. Apart from the fact that drivers who also cycle tend to be more aware of other road users, more cyclists on the road ensures that even drivers who don't cycle are more likely to expect the presence of cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

After all, the more people who take up cycling, the safer it will be for all road users, not just for cyclists – hence the conference title:
“Safer Cycling = More Cycling = Safer Cycling = More Cycling = Safer Cycling = More Cycling .....”

Perception is a big problem here," says Wilson. "Unsurprisingly, many people think cycling is dangerous but it has been proved that the more cyclists there are on the road, the safer it is per cyclist. Drivers get used to them."

The more people cycle, the more aware drivers become and the safer the roads are for cyclists.
