Real World MPG
Discussion
Rover 418 Tourer (diesel) early to mid 40's. I got stuck in traffic for 90mins on friday night on the way home due to an overturned lorry, and that tank dropped to 37mpg. My general pattern is 80miles each way at weekends mostly blatting along the A534 then A50 out of Stoke to my lodgings and 10miles each way into work during the week.

1.8T VW Sharan around 26mpg when used mainly around town and 28mpg when I mix that with motorway miles (which happens rarely). I think that pretty much matches what VW say.
Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (5.7ltr)...just got it, so too early to tell. I'm expecting it to be pretty poor, but it'll be mainly for weekend fun so I don't really care!

1997 volvo S40 1.9TDi, 140K on the clock, 10K after I gave it a top end rebuild. (cambelt snapped)
recently started doing 600 miles per week, and have achieved 44-46mpg, I work it out every time I fill up, in fact heres the past two months from my spreadsheet: The dip on 8th june is from working closer to home for a week....

I have discovered the cruise control drinks fuel, 70 on the cruise seems to use as much fuel as 85-90 doing it manually.
Given the current situation this week I am trying for the fabled 50mpg....
Even before I started doing the longer trips i never got it below 40mpg, and it does get driven as enthusiastically as you can drive a diesel.......
Edited to hopefully sort out formatting....
Sod it thats close enough....

If its a manual prepare to be surprised on a run. 30 is achieveable! I had an LS1 (6 speed) in Texas.I currently have a BMW 118d, 2008 (efficient dynamics) not quite getting the claimed 63MPG combined but 55.8MPG at present. But above figure is the combined average over the last 1000 miles or so, without trying too hard. I squeezed 65.7MPG on a run once, combined, but that involved coasting and rolling up to junctions (minimal braking) pissed a lot of people off and aded 50% to journey time! I can live with 56MPG.
I can get over on the mway - I reset at 70MPH on the flat it settles out at about 67MPG average.
If I didnt have a tuning box perhaps it would get the extra few MPG and hit the BMW figures.
Ok its an ugly 1er, but I really cant complain about the fuel consumption.
ETA: By the way, the chaps on the 1 forum with the 123d models arent getting much less MPG than the 118d, 45ish if they drive hard and 50ish if they drive gently. Not bad considering it makes half as much power again over the 118d.

Trying to calculate my MPG (as i'm used in thinking in liters/km) i found this handy MPG calculator online :
http://www.torquecars.com/tools/uk-mpg-calculator....
Simply fill in how much fuel you put in, the distance covered (and if you want how much you paid for your fuel) and you get your MPG, average pence/mile and the costs a set distance you can enter, all with the click of a button.
I filled my car last week, got 262 miles out of the full tank so according to this i'm doing 15.88 MPG in my 3.0 V6 Twin Turbo.

2006 Monaro 6.0L - Around 21 mpg when just running to work and back and driving in my normal style. It's is a 24 mile round trip each day that's 90% dual carriageway, however for the first few miles the engine's cold and getting horrific economy. My best figure on a 200 mile run was 29.7mpg according to the trip and near as damn it confirmed by brimming the tank. Generally I'll get 26 or 27mpg on a run though as I'm a bit heavy footed.
I've got about 300 miles of driving to do at the weekend I might see if I can hit 30mpg for the first time.
It's worth noticing that I try to avoid urban driving as 1) it winds me up and 2) I don't really want to think about the fuel economy, probably low teens :/
2001 VX220 2.2 - My previous car would average 29mpg on my commute, but on a run it could approach 40mpg!

Hows the Focus running at that mileage? Any Major issues with it? I'm planning to keep mine for a few years and 200k sounds re-assuring.Average 36mpg - Mainly commuting (20 miles) to work (usually outside of rush hours) and long distance Motorway stuff

Renault Clio 1.2 16v 33.5mpg I do about 120 miles a week moslty suburban driving and dual carriageways. I do have quite a heavy right foot. Although this is just what the electronic meter on the car shows so it could be less. I actually managed to get the mpg on the car up to 60 the other week but the way I had to drive to acheive it was a joke.
2003 BMW Z4 3.0 (M54).
Going by the onboard computer which I reset every time I fill up.
Mixed driving around town intermingled with A road's = 27/28mpg
Motorway driving covering long distances on cruise ~70 ish = 33/34mpg.
Driving for 'enthusiastic fun' = less than the above circa 24mpg
Recently had the DME (engine management brain) software upgraded to the latest issue, new air filter and new iridium plugs installed so will see if it has any benefit on economy - drives nicer regardless!
