renault 5 gt turbo,
Discussion
I had a Phase2 GT Turbo and didn't modify it at all. It was utterly reliable despite my 17year old mechanical skills and complete lack of preventative maintenance. I sold it with around 90k on the clock and it was mint. I'd love it back now. The power was just enough and it went like a go-kart (with understeer) I guess I had a good one. I heard once you took them past 160bhp they would fail quicker
I had an 11 also which had the same engine. It too was fun, very comfy and quicker than you'd think.

I had an 11 Turbo (phase 1) and a Phase 2 5 GT turbo - The 11 was 100 times better in every way - not only did it handle way better than the 5, it didn't run so hot thanks to the larger engine bay - I loved my super retro red pinstripe seats too! - Mine was the only uk car to have factory fitted Air con too! - Comparitvely, the 5 was garbage - Tinny, temperamental, unreliable and despite having 10bhp more than my 11 (115 to the 11's 105) never felt as quick to drive eitherI had an 11 also which had the same engine. turbo 2's go for very strong money, i do love the dimma very rare will own a dimma one day, raiders arnt bad either, a 1 owner dimma left in a yard dry stored went other week, 60k miles on for 1k, was gutted didnt have the cash, a very rare find, was about 10 mile away from me too, was an original factory dimma too

come on guys it didnt handle like a 205,
Virtually all of the road tests at the time put it ahead of the 1.9 205.It had all the lift off oversteer you could want but just slightly less than the 205.
Hot starting probs aside, when the heat from the turbo would boil the fuel in the carb, and the clutch cable life of 12 months (but took 10 mins to change) i loved mine. Fantastic handling car, possibly the best handling car i'll ever own.
Flashed through the thread but IMHO
Lots of pub talk / internet myths.
Way back when my Friend had a Raider it would regularly give another friends 1.9Gti a good pasting.
Renault screwed up sticking a carb on it, they had the injection sorted from the Turbo 1 / 2 god knows it must have been cost cutting that put them backwards.

Thrashed the living daylights off mine for 45k. No trim fell off and nothing major ever happened to it. I used to thrash home and then whilst letting it idle i would lift the bonnet to see the turbo and pipework glowing bright cherry red. Terrific B road car though. Nothing i've had since has been better and like i say, i really don't think i'll ever own a car that *handled* better. It was handling with a capital hah!
At the time my mate's n/a esprit couldn't get away from it. His Excel, which was another great handler and had 180 bhp v mine 115 could only start to leave it when on a m'way and we got close to 1.3 leptons.

I bought a C plate one back in 1989 ,when I was Nineteen .The Insurance cost £400 p/a ,TPFT ,which was a lot of money for me back then.Possibly the most fun car I have ever owned - covered several RAC rallies in it ,back in the days when the rally was worth watching and covered most of the UK .2500 miles in five days was the norm back then .Used to plaster the car with Lombard stickers and just hoon around for five days with hundreds of others - got some of it on video ,doing about 115 down a B road in Humberside and being OVERTAKEN by a 911!Good days....
The car was pretty reliable ,apart from the turbo going once .It got some serious abuse ,and needed servicing every 6000 miles ,if i remember.Fantastic handling ,but what impressed me more was the brakes ,really very good ,could pull the car up from silly speeds with no drama ,time after time.
The biggest problem I had was the terrible seat folding mechanism ,got very wonky over time ,and the seat frame broke several times as well .Mine was standard ,and fast enough!

turbo pacs in durham had a beautifull black dimma back in the day, thousands spent on it, was featured i maxpower too, best 5 ive ever seen, not the tat or rep max power has now so before you start, this was back in the day, remember mark the owner had a turbo 2 delivered in red from america, was suposed to start work on it and send it to ireland, top and bottom of the story, it had being there for years no contact with owner he claimed it, reckon it was used to smuggle drugs over in, sold it on for 5k

The R5 GT Turbo was the best hatch in it's category. Period. the 205 was a wooly-wooftah car for girls made from spinach and dress material. I test drove both and had no hesitation whatsoever in dismissing the 205 as an effete girl's car and I bought a 1986 115hp GT turbo which I upgraded to an alleged 150hp. It was fab.
To the poster who said they torque steered, so did mine initially and I felt immensely let down. i took it down and had the suspension aligned and presto, you could apply the full whack without drama.
