Volvo V70 D5 SE

Mrs Stumpage seems to have settled on one of these for the family wagon. I quiet like them but are they any good? Not looking for alternative suggestions (It's taken long enough to decide on this) just your experience of them.
We have the MX5 for fun so we are just looking for a big comfy cruiser that won't cost the earth to run.

They are pretty good.
Ride could be better...they can bit a little crashy over small bumps. I am being picky though.
Make sure you get a well spec'd car is buying used. Leather, dolby etc. They seems to work better as autos.
The right colour is also important.
Good choice although they are not as big in the back as the volvos of old.

Just bought a 2003 XC70 for £7.5k with ALL the toys (even a little train set to play with). It's by far the comfiest, most luxurious vehicle I've owned. Gets ~43mpg combined which I was pretty surprised by, and could carry an entire women's netball team if one needed to.

SE is leathery, so that's ok.
We have the 2.4T which is a great car: it goes well enough, is fantastically comfy, is reliable and loads of room in it. Only downside is the economy, which is terrible around town and just bearable on the open road.
The D5 is all of the above but with decent economy added into the mix. Just don't get one in Jewish racing gold or similar wish/wash colour!

Nice ! I tried to talk the missus into one of those recently, surprised at the mpg you get, is it a D5 engine ? What mileage ?Slipper-tastic!
Guys - happy for you to point me in the direction of a VFM T5 (got to be newer 260bhp).
BOT - if you seek a post 2005 diesel they come in 163 and 185bhp where one variant is expressed as 2.4D and other D5 when in reality they are the same block. They will both be EU IV and use more fuel than the the older (2003 - 2005) EU III engine, where the D5 was the only option but generated only 163bhp.
If you want toys - find a SE LUX. If you Can find one with Communications pack and RTI, even better.

Got my V70 D5 SE 06 about 4 weeks ago...
Apart from an ongoing problem with my local dealer I love it so far. Its the geartronic but feels like its got plenty of poke and you can switch to manual mode for "fun" - if hurtling something like that about is considered "fun".
I got mine with 52k on the clock, its got most of the toys being an ex dealer car - so privacy glass, xenons, heathed seats, spoilererer.
I paid what I consider a very fair price from Volvo main dealer!
The colour is very important, they can look a bit poop in some colours and to be fair the rear spoiler does make a difference to the looks.

I had an S60 D5 (same car, different body style).
Good points
- Very well put together, everything feels very sturdy and well made.
- The most comfortable seats, ever.
- Lots of toys (cool slide out of the dash Sat Nav/TV on some!).
- Mostly reliable.
- D5 engine very economic (mid 40's very easy, mid 50's possible with effort on a cruise).
- Very well laid out dash. Very ergonomic. Very Volvo.
- D5 engine loves being remapped. I had 210bhp/475NM in mine no problem.
- Correctly serviced, will do stellar mileage.
- 185bhp version more refined and powerful than the 163bhp, but at the cost of fuel economy.
Bad points
- Crashy suspension
- Big bills when things do go wrong (no worse than any 'premium' marque, though.
- FWD and lots of torque doesn't go too well. D5 wheel spins pretty easily in the wet from the traffic light. Traction control is not very advanced and quite slow to help (hinder) progress.
- Pretty unfashionable if you care about these things.
- Auto box is not very good, quite laggy and completely kills the fuel consumption. Go manual!
