Think 24 savings of 10g is actually 640g or 0.64kg, not the 6kg suggested?

How would this compare to the Lotus Europa?

Well it has two less seats, to start with.

ETA: Oops, the Europa? I read Evora. boxedin

Think of the Europa as an Elise made a bit more comfortable and you wont be far off. It's still much more raw and more... connected feeling than the Boxster or Cayman. The engine map that they originally shipped the Europa with is dire too, although they've probably fixed that in the later, more powerful, versions.

ETA: Of course I haven't driven a Cayman with the latest revisions.

Maybe they are just one example of several weight savings that add up to 6kg ?

The artcile does state 'contributes' rather than 'is'.

It's green with revolting wheels - unless you really really want to join in with the depreciation moaners on the Porsche forum I suggest you look at the other options laugh

Amazing..not one person posted saying how this would be thrashed by some rice burning jap car. Is Porsche getting some respect finally?
I must say, I do like the facelift. Both this and the Boxster look fresh and purposeful. Bravo!

Price when fully specced is close to £55k and is where in the current climate no matter how quick it is, this car is going to falter. Used 997S's under £35k dont really help either. They need to reconstruct there pricing in my opinion with the Cayman S fully specced going for under £40k.

Depends what you mean by fully spec'd.

It has a fantastic engine, sublime handling, powerful brakes, aircon and leather seats as std. It goes 170+mph and does 30mpg & there isn't another mid-engined 2 seater that gets close this side of a Ferrari 430.

Pretty much everything else you might add from the options list misses the point, adds weight or degrades the drive and amplifies the depreciation hit. And I'd put leather-everything, the 2nd rate nav/phone, PDK, lots of speakers, noisy exhaust and big wheels into that pot.

If you must have all that stuff buy a Mercedes.

About the only things I'd add would be PASM, an ipod link & the £140 sports s/wheel, so £1400. And std Carrara white would do me fine thanks.

One common theme on PH's recently is that Porsche's have lost focus and/or driving engagement. There have even been threads on speccing stripped out Clubsport cars, using smaller more efficient engines and light weight. Piling on the extra's just doesn't make sense.

My view; its a shame Porsche didn't add DI to the 2.9. 275bhp and 35mpg and I'd p/ex my Cayman (plus a limb) for one.

Well there's the Evora which is due out soon, although it'll be a 2+2 initially. Similar price though.

I think to say theres nothing can touch a cayman this side of a F430 is a bit of a wild opinion, depending on what you want from a car i can think of a few mid engined cars that would batter a Cayman S.

Poor mans 911?

To me it looks fresher and more purposeful than its Grandfather. There must be much more smiles and toys in a specced up Cayman than in a basic 911?
I hate it when they refer to the Cayman or Boxster as being for those who can't afford a 911, firstly because it's pompous tripe but also because it often isn't true.

I suppose an F430 is for those who can't afford an Enzo, a Gallardo for those who can't afford a Murcielago, etc?! rolleyes

Well I would (and did) take an Elise over a Cayman.

To be fair, both of those examples are probably often true. It doesn't make them bad cars though.

An Elise is nowhere near as accomplished as the Cayman S as an all rounder, which is what most people want.

The Lotus is not a place I'd like to be on motorways or long journeys.

SS7 said "depending on what you want from a car", I was responding to that. I don't drive on the motorway or carry large items much, so for me the Cayman really does have no advantages over a Lotus and the significant disadvantage that it's much less fun to drive, along with far higher running costs, etc.

Had I wanted a GT, I would have seriously considered a Cayman. I didn't though. driving

I think it would be fair to say that there is nothing that does everything better than a Cayman, but then you could say much the same about almost any car.
