I'm going to stick my neck out and say - based on nothing more than a feeling - that by the turn of the year you'll see a sub £30k R8. I think the arrival of the V10 combined with the "credit crunch" is going to depress the V8 prices quite a bit.

Watch me totally and utterly wrong by December biggrin

£58k at auction for a 2008 tronic car seems very good value against a new price of £88k, but was £88k just too much in the first place? Surely they wont fall below £40k ever?
I don't know about that. I suspect the market history of the R8 will closely mirror that of the Honda NSX.
Retaining 50%+ after five years?

I suspect that with a lot of people no modern German or Japanese car will ever have 'soul' regardless of how it looks or drives.

Also to the person who said they feel more when they see a 911 turbo drive past than an R8 I just cannot understand that. R8's still have that stop and stare effect on me, 911's are the same as watching a BMW 3 series drive past...

Unfortunately Audi have made a beautiful car, electronically perfect but as is so often the case it lacks soul....something few German cars have ever had, and thus people do not want to keep long term such cars....look at M5 and M6 prices or SLK and CLK AMG prices....ouch.

Audi need to create a separate 'motorsport' identity, not an RS or even an R, but something like Toyota and Lexus or in the US Honda and Acura!

They also need to race the R8 possibly in a one make championship around the DTM or WTCC. If really brave a Procar type series across the US and Asia.
WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!!! GERMAN CARS HAVE NO SOUL... U HAVING A LAUGH????

I forgot what a "good" racing heritage JAP cars have.

Give me a uber cool stealthy fast german car ANYDAY over a plastic jap piece of crap.

Separate motorsport identity!! well what are BMWS M CARS AND AUDIS RS DIVISIONS etc etc???

And yes i have had many FAST german cars in my time and currently have a B7 RS4.

Im not sure why there is so much speculation an sepcifically the R8.
Its current depreciation has nothing whatsoever to do with the car- just market conditions.
THis thread might just as well have been titled "Prestige car prices-where will they stop?".
Look at a 997 which is the closest comparable.
Im sure the depreciation mirrors it exactly.
People are generally nervous about buying high value cars in this climate. That is all there is to it.Its not over priced. It is a fantastic achievment by Audi and the only thing in years that has come close to being a decent Porsche competitor.
TO imply, as many are doing, that its depreciation is because it is a bit rubbish or has no soul is simply incorrect. Every car including Ferraris, Lamorghinis, Aston Martins etc are doing exactly the same thing

Why on earth not? Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, BMW M cars, the Honda NSX, Aston Martins and others all have, why wouldn't the R8?

to be fair he has a point, go back to the thirties when german racing cars ruled the world. there are countless german cars that have "soul" (neglecting the fact that "soul" is subjective and means different things to different people)... off the top of my head there is the '73 911 RS, the E30 M3, the UR Quattro, the M1, the Cosworth 190, the 300SL, none of which could be argued as lacking that certain something that sets them apart form other cars....

racing does nothing to a car brand these days other than provide an outlet for technology which may or may not find its way into a road car.

as for the branding of toyota/honda in the states as lexus and acura to give them some racing heritage, what a joke, its like trying to convince someone that the new "chevrolet" matiz (aka a daewoo) has the same heritage as the corvette stingray!...

however, some japanese manufacturers do have a good racing pedigree, honda were in f21 in the 60s with Richie Ginther, the Toyota 7 was a beast of a sportscar, as was their Group C car. Nissan had a relatively successful foray into Group C too...

Still look like a big TT to me just cant get excited about them in the same way as a Ferrari or a lambo.

I always think oh its an Audi, where as with Ferrari's etc I just seem to stand open mouthed and stare no matter werher its a 15k 308 or a 200k F40

Just not my bag given the money I would take a 997 again

I know of an 07 car with over 35k on it, it's had a few R-Tronic issues (complete new gearbox fitted under warranty) but other than that its not missed a beat.
rofl Never missed a beat, only the gearbox blew up... nothing serious.......................... rofl

Lol. Only on new list price. When the prices are equivealent, the sectors will overlap significantly.

Yes its true that some people the desire an R8 wont ever want a Lambo, the majority of people make these desicions based on price. When offerred the choice of a brand new R8 (esp the new V10) or an 12 month old Gallardo with 4000 miles on the clock and balance of warranty, many will go with the Gallardo instead. this will hit resale figures.

Audi or Lamborghini sir?

On Auto Trader today there are 110 Gallardo's and 118 R8's, hardly a big difference. As for values the Gallardo’s are dropping in price by a higher percentage than the R8's. When you add the 911's into the mix you can currently chose from over 1500, but they have been around a lot longer so I will give them that.
As a customer in this market I think the car appeals to different sorts of people. I have driven all three, the 911 does its job very well, it has developed over the years into a great car but due to the sheer numbers on the roads today they have just become a part of the scenery in my opinion.
The Gallardo was built and developed under Audi rule; let’s not forget that, so all you folks saying that the R8 does not have soul need to look under the skin of the Lambo, without Audi it would not exist. As an example I give you an R8/Gallardo gearbox:

The underpinnings of both cars are almost the same, just tuned differently. I prefer the R8 as it is more exploitable more of the time and has been shown to be quicker around some tracks than the lighter Gallardo.
I prefer the less brash looks of the R8 and I think its looks will hold up better over the long run. I have always felt that Lambo's looks are very much of their time, you can always tell which era they came from.
As for the R8 V10 you are getting as near as damn it Gallardo LP-560 performance for £45K less, sounds like a bargin to me.

Sorry mate, as one of those customers I have to say you are wrong. A car purchase at this level tends to be done with the heart as no one buys a £100k car because it was a practical thing to do. The R8 will be cheaper to run, a better long term bet and just as fast. As time moves on I think you will find that the R8 will be regarded as a very solid second hand buy and I also predict you will find that they will be seen with much higher mileages in the coming years.
Lambo's with high mileages have always had a hard time on the second hand market.

Most high-mileage cars like that are prepared for sale by a man with a laptop.
