Speedy cables fixed my TVR speed when it got stuck http://www.speedycables.com/ they also do recalibration but you need to send the speedo to them. Probably worth a chat with them to see if its possible on your speedo.

Jesus. I thought, after this thread that you were going to stop asking stupid questions on PH.

Sadly I was mistaken so I've chosen the default answer for any of your threads; Don't do it.

Go on, explain why its a stupid question? If my speedometer is showing nearly 30 when im doing just over 20, why is it stupid of me to want it recalibrated?

Some of you are getting too big for your own boots me thinks.

Right. You have a car worth roughly £600 and you want to SPEND MONEY on making this car worth roughly £600 when it's something that can easily be accounted for in every day driving.

My old Mk2 Golf did exactly the same thing; At 30 on the clocks it was doing 22, at 78 on the clocks it was doing 70 so do you know what I did? I drove at 75 according to the speedo on a NSL dual carriageway and, generally, at 35 according to the clocks in a 30. Better safe than sorry and all that.

Really though, my main gripe with you, is that you seem to have nothing else to worry about other than your overpriced, underpowered Mk3 Golf. You don't do many hours at work, so you shouldn't really have money to waste on crap like this and you spend all of your time on here telling people things they don't care about and asking questions that anybody with half a brain could work out the answers to. Maybe you should spend some of that time and money on looking for a more full-time job and getting yourself to the interviews?

Do keep us posted though.

Why don't you just subtract 7mph from your indicated speed. Are you really that crap at maths?

Shall we say 5 to make it easier? Do an indicated 35 in 30s and you'll be doing 28 (so you'll be legal), like iRoll suggested?

When I changed my wheels on my Mini I used a Motorbike Speedo...a digital one...you can calibrate it yourself. Can't remember how much it was, but it was cheap, cos I am tight! haha

Basically it came with cable and sensor...bit like a cycle speedo...

Just a thought anyway...

No it is not. At 1mph it doesn't read 8mph, does it? So what you mean is it it's merely reading over by a percentage, and as your speed rises the error increases. If it DID read 8mph over at all speeds you'd simply bend the needle, job done.

The speedos on both my stock cars reads best part of 10% over, so at a GPS indicated 30mph the speedo reads 33mph. Same at a GPS 70mph, the cars speedo reads 77mph.

Some of you on this thread need to seriously remove whatever it is that's stuck firmly up your backsides or just plainly grow up. If the lad wants a speedo that reads correctly then so be it. It matters not whether his car is worth ten bob or ten grand the point is he asked a simple question and the bandwagon riders jumped in en masse to contribute nothing but childish insults. If that's the only way to make yourselves feel just that little bit superior after taking flack from the boss all day then it's about time you found another outlet for your bile and frustration.

Just not really sure why its such an issue? I view the speedo over read as a sort of speed camera safety margin, if you desperately need to know your exact speed (Though I can't understand at all why this would be necessary,) get a sat nav on your dash.

I hope Thom comes back and reads what you have said. I second what you say. I wonder why the same people crop up in his threads just to give the young lad some st, probably bullied at school.

+1 It's completely not on the way many members treat him, whatever you think of someone, there's no need to abandon civility and I dare lay a bet that it wouldn't be taking place in a real-life conversation between them and him

Well if thats the case im sure you have NEVER in your whole life been forgiven for anything you've ever done wrong since age 0, correct? Because in your eyes this guy deserves a life of shame and pain, even though he's apologised and has been pretty reasonable since...

OP i've often wondered this myself and im suprised it isn't part of a major service, i guess thats due to it not being easy to do/fix maybe...

Thom, is it definitely showing the same speed error all the way through the range or hp it actually a percentage error? If it's the latter, just leave it and do the maths in your head as the fix will be more hassle than it's worth.

If it is showing the same speed error all the way round though, it's an easy fix - remove the trim surround from the speedo cluster, pop the cluster out (couple of screws and the cable plug on the rear), remove the front of the cluster, lift the speedo needle over the end stop and allow it to come to rest. Note its position, then remove the needle carefully and re-fit it slightly further round to correspond with say a 5mph adjustment. Move the needle back over the stop, reassemble the cluster and fit it back into the car. Job done. :-)

Drop me an email if you need more details.
